I updated the MR to use offsets instead of indexes. I also took that opportunity to change a bit how objects are managed on the server side, mmapping the session in persistent blocks so that objects pointers can be used.

Thanks. It's better, but I still feel like client side implementation is not optimal. The nice thing about persistent mappings, like I mentioned earlier, is that we could just store and pass pointers, removing the need for both `get_thread_session_object_locator` and ref-counted session struct. We could for example just return an offset and shared object id in `set_thread_desktop` request and then store object pointer (from the offset) and id in `user_thread_info`. `get_cursor_pos` would then have all it needs to validate (with stored id), "lock" and use that pointer straight from the thread data.

To implement persistent mappings, we need to either give up growable memory, or map the newer extents in chunks.
I saw @rbernon's earlier comment that said "mapping the session in chunks is possible, but it's just a different approach and doesn't change much: instead of refcounting the session you'd need to add some logic to keep chunks around and map new ones."
For example, we'd need to keep the list of chunks. Also, the locator should now indicate which chunk the memory resides in (or somehow deduce it from offset).
Or maybe there's a simpler way that I missed?

This is only true for the thread desktop and message queue, but not for thread input (when attached/detached), or foreground input (when foreground changes), which may change and thus needs to be invalidated and queried again, at any time. The current mechanism works in both cases and is future proof for other kind of objects.

Is something like https://gitlab.winehq.org/rbernon/wine/-/commit/f5049bd9c9352a70b66354c1a7c6... any better?

If we map in chunks, we should ensure that objects do not cross chunk boundaries. An object spanning two chunks will appear discontiguous in client's virtual memory.
If every object is smaller than a page, the simplest fix is to ensure each object fits inside one page. This doesn't work for objects larger than a page, though.

I don't see why this is necessary, in the commit above we just pass the object size when looking for a mmaped block (right now it's fixed but could be variable later), and look a block containing [offset, offset + size), or mmap a new one which will include the range.

Yes, I think it's better.
It's hard for me to comment on details of thread input without seeing the code, but it sounds to me that a helper that a helper that returns a pointer from an offset could be just shared between both (and other user objects like windows), while the "locator" is specific to the use case. In this MR, that just adds unnecessary extra server call.

Sure, we can probably try to initialize the desktop / thread message queue cached objects from the requests that change them, but I don't think it's a good idea to treat these objects specifically otherwise.
Objects can be invalidated from the server side by simply changing their id, and clients then have to call wineserver to get the new object id / offset. Of course, right now desktop / queues objects never need to change, but we can very well imagine doing something differently, and I think there's no reason to introduce a different handling on the client side depending on the object types.
