I notice you dropped the fstatat(). It was there to reduce chance for race and/or conflict with accidental leftover tmpnames.
If you don't like the fstatat(), we can use `mkdirat( dirfd, tmpname, 0777 )` to atomically probe for existence and create an empty directory that will be replaced by `renameat()`.
(Yes, rename(2) replaces empty directories.)
Jinoh Kang (@iamahuman) commented about server/fd.c:

To elaborate on my suggestion (untested):
```suggestion:-6+0 if (mkdirat( dirfd, tmpname, 0777 )) { if (errno == EEXIST) continue; file_set_error(); goto ret; }
if (renameat( dirfd, srcname, dirfd, tmpname )) { file_set_error(); unlinkat( dirfd, tmpname, AT_REMOVEDIR ); goto ret; }
I've been told that RenameFile() can be called on filesystems where hardlinks are unsupported (e.g., FAT32 which does casefolding as well).
When unsupported, linkat(2) returns EPERM[^p] or EOPNOTSUPP[^o]. If either are returned, we should fall back to no-hardlink path (which we originally intended for `is_dir` case).
