The pandemic wasn't "over" that long and I noticed quite high flight prices to Minnesota for the WineConf dates. Maybe there was some other, bigger event? The original plan for this year was Japan, which would be really interesting, but I guess flight prices would be high as well from USA and Europe at least. FOSDEM 2023

This year FOSDEM will once again take place in Brussels, on February 4 and 5. The Wine project won't have an official presence at the conference this year, but a (modest) number of us do intend to visit Brussels during that time. Is anyone else already planning to attend this year? Like previous conferences, you'll be able to find most of us in the #wineconf:matrix.org Matrix room. Henri

WineConf - starting next week!

Hi folks, We are excited to welcome you in person to the 2022 Wine Conference, held in conjunction with the X.org developers conference (XDC) and the FOSS XR conference. The XDC conference will start on Tuesday morning, October 4th. The program is here: https://indico.freedesktop.org/event/2/timetable/#all.detailed The official events start at 8:30 am, but we will have coffee and pastries available from 7:30 on Tuesday and 8 on Wednesday and Thursday. WineConf proper will start on Wednesday morning, October 5th, with Alexandre's keynote. We expect everyone attending to be vaccinated and to be respectful of people that are trying to avoid catching COVID. Masks are mandatory, except when presenting or eating. The plan is to gather at Brit's Pub, both Monday and Tuesday in the late afternoon to welcome arrivals. We’ll try to have a table with some sort of a sign, and folks can connect, have a drink, and then perhaps group up to explore alternate food. Note that if the weather is nice, we may be up on the roof, so explore far to find us. We will be on the Minneapolis campus of St. Thomas, which is a mildly confusing campus. The hope is that all three projects can mingle and socialize and enjoy the return of in person meetings. We will again use a Matrix chat room just for the conference. Matrix has a variety of apps, and Element, the default one is easy to configure on many devices, including mobile phones. WineConf 2022 - Bring out your talks

(Resending to the wineconf mailing list, which I forgot) Hey folks, I've just learned that what we've done all these years is an un conference (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unconference) or a BarCamp (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BarCamp). So we were cool *long* before these other cats starting copying us. However, since we are partnering with X.org on Wine Conf, and they use the slick Indico conference system, we should get with the program. I would really appreciate it if folks could submit talk ideas: https://indico.freedesktop.org/event/2/abstracts/ We have, a non zero number of scheduled presentations already, but think that number may be one. Mailing list migration.

I will be migrating this list to mailman version 3 today. This will take your logins and archives to a new URL. I will post the new urls and update the website for them once the migration is complete. The old archives will remain online, but new posts will not be added to them. They will remain online so things that link to them will not break. Mailman 3 has a completely different interface and archive system from the old 2.x version. But, it does have some nice features like being able to web search the archives. -N

Wineconf 2022 - with X.org - October 4-6

[This is a send to wineconf ml as well as wine-devel; my apologies for the oversight] Hello all! After a 2 year hiatus the Wine Developers Conference, AKA WineConf, is being held in conjunction with the X.Org Developers Conference (XDC) in Minneapolis, MN from October 4th until Oct 6th, with a Wine focus on the 5th and 6th. This year, the two events are being held together allowing attendees to freely attend any programming they desire. The event is free to attend and open to the general public. We will concentrate the Wine related events on the 5th and 6th, so if your available travel time is limited, you can come just for those two days. Programming for the conference will consist of multiple tracks taking place in several rooms. There will be one main track for Wine and one or two overflow rooms for discussion. As always there will be plenty of time where there will be no programming to allow participants to engage in spontaneous conversation. This is being called the 'hallway track'. We are now requesting proposals for talks, workshops and demos for this year. When you propose your talk, if you have a preference toward a time slot and day please express that. This year the conference is longer, so there should be plenty of slots for all the relevant and interested presenters. Topics should obviously be of interest to the other attendees, i.e., the broader Wine community, but note that that doesn't imply the talk has to be about Wine itself. Additionally while proposals for pre-recorded or virtual presentations can be submitted, as of writing, we have a strong preference for in-person talks. Presentations should fall into one of the the following formats: Talk (full slot) Technical presentation in the main WineConf track, with around 35 minutes of presentation plus 10 minutes of Q&A. This can be anything: a talk about work-in-progress, a proposal for change, analysis of trends, etc. Talk (half slot) Technical presentation in the main WineConf track, with around 15 minutes of presentation and 5 minutes of Q&A. This can be anything: a talk about work-in-progress, a proposal for change, analysis of trends, etc. Demo (10 minutes) We will try to schedule them early and have a demo place throughout the conference. Lightning Talk (5 minutes) Scheduled throughout the conference in the main WineConf track. Any hallway track discussions summaries have priority. Workshop Discussion Topic Discussion topic for a smaller group. Ideally two people submit a proposal, one to lead the discussion and make sure it stays on track, second person to keep notes. Please mention relevant talk submissions for the main track that should kick of the discussion. These talks will be scheduled early in the conference program. Summary of the discussion will be presented at the end of the conference in a lightning talk. Presenters will be selected from those who submit before the deadline: July 4, 2022. There is usually time left for late talk proposals, but do not count on it. Please do submit your proposal in a timely fashion. You can submit Workshop, Demo and Lightning Talk proposals any time, even during the conference. Wineconf futures

Hi folks, I've got a complex set of thoughts about future Wine conferences which I've discussed privately with some folks, and wanted to bring up publicly. I'm going to share an overview here, and then have another thread strictly about Wineconf 2022. Arek Hiler has suggested that CodeWeavers host the X Developers Conference in Minnesota in September of 2022. That seems like a great idea to a lot of us. Our pitch to host that becomes stronger if we combine it with another conference, which creates a reason to combine Wineconf with XDC 2022. There also seems to be broad agreement that would be a good idea. I'll start another thread on that, with some further complications. However, working backwards, you come to the conclusion that our next Wine conference, if it's not that one in 2022, would probably be best accomplished in 2021. Given the vaccination rates in Japan, that seems to preclude the plan we had in place, which was a Wineconf in Japan. Alexandre and I have very little appetite for a virtual conference, which pretty much derailed the efforts to have a virtual conference in 2020 and suggests that trying to have a virtual conference in 2021 would not go well. Given all that, there is some thought to try for a hybrid conference somewhere in Europe later this year. The vaccination rates have led to an opening in the US that has been joyful; the hope is that Europe will not be far behind. I've discussed this with a range of folks, and the consensus seemed to be to wait and see. The Europeans are still quite nervous about that, and there is some concern about the variations, but they admit that perspectives may shift. I'm prepared to argue that a somewhat hurried, somewhat risky (i.e. with a real risk of cancellation) conference would still be worth it. I am the raging extrovert of the group, though. At any rate, the thought was to wait one or two months and then see, at least for Wineconf 2021. The full thought, then, is if our bid is accepted by XDC to have Wineconf 2022 in Minnesota, and then Japan in 2023. If our bid is not accepted, then I imagine Wineconf 2022 would be in Japan. Wineconf 2022 with XDC

Hi all, As promised, here is a list of thoughts and concerns about Wineconf 2022, presuming it is held with XDC. First, XDC is attended by about 100-120 people, and usually has one main room, with scheduled tracks across three days, seemingly always a Wednesday-Friday. They also like to have a second room, which is mostly used as spillover, although there are sometimes scheduled work shops in that room that overlap with the main track. Wineconf has historically been on a Saturday/Sunday. The idea there was to try to make it easier for people that don't work professionally on Wine to attend. I don't know if that rationale still holds. I'm particularly curious to hear from people that don't work professionally on Wine as to whether or not this would discourage them from coming. I doubt that XDC would be interested in a different schedule, so that then leads me to two ideas: hold Wineconf interleaved with XDC on all or some combination of the Wednesday/Thursday/Friday, or hold Wineconf on the Friday/Saturday, so as to overlap by only one day. My sense is that the experiment would be most interesting with a full interleaving, but I'm really curious what others think. If we do the fully interleaved strategy, then I think we will want three rooms. We can schedule tracks in the two rooms, with one room being mostly X, and one room being mostly Wine, but with overlap allowed. The third room is social and spillover. That may be a bit of overkill. My sense is that both Wine and X.org have been running light on tracks of late, and so the added tracks from Wine may be enough to fill up the empty spaces left by X.org. But I think a little overkill is probably better than feeling like we're missing a room. If we do the overlap option, then I'd probably just get two rooms, as I think x.org could give over their normal 'second' room to us for one day. My thinking is to pin down some of these details, and then ask the Wine committee to approve Wineconf 2022 with those parameters so that we can submit an RFP to X.org. Note that the deadline for RFPs to x.org is September 1, 2021, which is why I am bringing this up now. I'd appreciate other thoughts and things I might have missed. Cheers, Jeremy

WineConf 2020 Postponed to 2021

Hello Everyone, I am very sad to announce that after extensive conversations with the Wine Committee and our Japanese Host we have come to the decision that because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic it is best to postpone Wineconf 2020. The plan is to resume the conference again in the fall of 2021. We apologize to everyone involved and hope this does not negatively impact your ability to come to the 2021 conference. More details will be forthcoming as we approach fall of 2021. We look forward to seeing you all then! -aric
