I could track down the error to Changeset 18155 (http://www.winehq.org/hypermail/wine-cvs/2005/06/0312.html) all older version that I tested run without problems. At first the wine-preloader process just hung - I couldn't kill it, only restart to get rid of the process. When I put the Game CD-ROM into my other drive, the process just terminates before getting into the game. Every time I start Diablo II with the newer Wine version, I get the following message in my syslog: Jul 31 15:26:02 kos-mos kernel: hdc: write_intr: wrong transfer direction! Jul 31 15:26:09 kos-mos kernel: hdc: write_intr: wrong transfer direction! After installing wine, I ran winecfg and I did not change anything. Then I ran the EndNote 7 installation under wine. The installation itself worked fine although the EndNote installer said that it would install the "updated Rich Edit Control 3.0" for me. Then I opened the EndNote.EXE binary successfully. However when I try to type in new references by opening the "new reference" dialog, the vertical spacings of the fields are wrong and as a result, I am not able to see the content I have just typed to the fields. Is this a RichEdit problem and how could we fix this? The crashing was still there, sometimes endless loops when trying to access vfat partitons mounted with UTF8. But from the dump from strace I became suspicious the vfat modules (kernel 2.4.25) had something to do: ioctl(6, VFAT_IOCTL_READDIR_BOTH, 0x406c0018) = 0 ioctl(6, VFAT_IOCTL_READDIR_BOTH, 0x406c0018) = 0 (going on forever) So I started Linux with kernel 2.6.11 and started "wine notepad", just for testing. I chose "open" from the menu so the file chooser would appear. No crash, I read the directorioes of VFAT disks mounted with UTF8 perfectly with correct filenames, even those names with non-ascii characters used in Spanish. Maybe the solution to the problem for the person starting this bugfix request is just to add the "iocharset" option to vfat entries in his /etc/fstab file. NOTE: The SC (single click) Miniserver runs the same way as a regular VNC server, but always connects to the same address (very usefull for remote support). I ran the sc executable on windows, wich created a temporary directory with all files. I zipped this directory and used it on linux. The first time I executed wine winvnc.exe it complained about the missing dll: err:module:import_dll Library MSVCP60.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\windows\\temp\\7zS2e2.tmp\\winvnc.exe") not found I downloaded this dll from a WinXP machine and it was able to start. I could check on the Viewr machine the question being asked and after accepting nothing shows (on either sides). It stated on the viewer machine the Windows 98 SE was in use. I changed the parameters of wine to force the use of Windows XP, and after running it it asked on the viewer like the previous time but now it identified as Windows XP SP2.
