SUMMARY LEGO City Undercover reproducibly crashes with EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005), reading from address 0xC (null pointer + small offset), inside xaudio2_7 (FAudio_AudioClientThread). The crash is deterministic per save/location rather than time-based: it happens specifically at scene transitions where the player enters a building or mission interior. A preceding NPC conversation is not required - the crash also occurs when entering an interior with no dialogue beforehand. Observed at four different locations across multiple playthrough attempts: the skyscraper entrance in Chapter 2; a building entrance on "Prison Island" immediately after a conversation with the character "Blue"; entering the police station; and entering the dojo. The crash reproduces identically across three different Proton/Wine builds, is independent of controller vs. keyboard/mouse input, is independent of PipeWire/PulseAudio backend health, and disappears completely when xaudio2_7 is disabled outright, strongly localizing the fault to this audio component. A representative crash log/backtrace is attached separately to this report. ENVIRONMENT Distro: CachyOS (Arch-based) Audio stack: PipeWire + pipewire-pulse + WirePlumber (no errors/xruns logged around crash time) Proton/Wine builds tested (crash reproduces identically on all): - proton-cachy-11-20260703 - GE-Proton11-6 - GE-Proton11-7 (wine-staging 11.0) Game: LEGO City Undercover, Steam AppID 578330 Launch options tested (crash persists under all combinations below unless noted): - PROTON_LOG=1 PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=240 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" %command% - PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=240 WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=b,n" %command% (esync/fsync re-enabled) - PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=240 WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n" %command% (native only, after installing the full xact verb via protontricks - see below) - PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=240 WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=" %command% - crash does not occur with this override (see Diagnostic steps below) STEPS TO REPRODUCE 1. Launch LEGO City Undercover via Proton/Wine (any of the builds above). 2. Reach any point where the game transitions from an exterior/open-world area into a building or mission interior (e.g. the Chapter 2 skyscraper entrance, the Prison Island building entrance, entering the police station, or entering the dojo). A preceding NPC dialogue/conversation is not required for the crash to occur - it also happens on interior transitions with no dialogue beforehand. 3. Trigger the interior transition (enter the building/mission). 4. Game crashes within 1-2 game-seconds of the transition. DIAGNOSTIC STEPS TAKEN / RULED OUT - Controller vs. keyboard+mouse: no difference - crash reproduces identically with the controller fully disconnected. - DLL override order (xaudio2_7=n,b vs b,n vs n with full xact dependency set installed): crash persists in all cases, with the same fault signature (null pointer + offset 0xC) whether the loaded module is the native Windows xaudio2_7.dll or Wine's builtin FAudio-based implementation. - Follow-up with xaudio2_7=n (native, full xact set installed via protontricks): initially appeared to resolve the crash - the two previously-crashing transitions (skyscraper entrance, Prison Island building entrance) were completed successfully in one session. However, in a later session the identical fault (null pointer + offset 0xC, xaudio2_7/audio_client_main thread) recurred at new, previously-unaffected transition points (mission start, entering the police station, and entering the dojo), with the native module loaded (confirmed native, not builtin, in the log). This indicates the native+xact configuration does not fix the underlying bug, it only shifts which specific transitions are affected - consistent with a genuine timing-dependent race rather than a fixed, single-location defect. - protontricks 578330 xact was run to fully install the matching xactengine2.x-3.7, xaudio2.0-2.7, x3daudio, and xapofx component set - crash persists unchanged. - PipeWire/WirePlumber logs (journalctl --user -b -u pipewire -u pipewire-pulse -u wireplumber) around the crash timestamp show no errors, xruns, or device reconnects, ruling out a transient audio-backend failure as the trigger. - Proton/Wine version: reproduces identically on 3 separate builds spanning different wine-staging bleeding-edge snapshots, so this is not a single-build regression. - Root cause isolation: with WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=" (module fully disabled), the crash does not occur and the previously-crashing transitions complete successfully (game runs without audio through that component). This confirms the fault is inside this specific audio API layer rather than elsewhere in the game/engine or in graphics/DXVK. HYPOTHESIS Because the crash consistently coincides with an exterior-to-interior scene/music transition, regardless of whether a dialogue precedes it, and rather than correlating with elapsed play time or any PipeWire/backend event, this looks like a race condition in FAudio's XAudio2 voice teardown vs. callback-in-flight handling: e.g. a source voice (ambient/exterior music, or occasionally dialogue) being stopped/destroyed on the game's main thread while FAudio_AudioClientThread is concurrently mid-callback on that same voice, leading to a dereference through a small fixed offset (0xC) into a freed or null callback/vtable pointer.
