It needs to be confirmed though. The brighter screen is probably from gamma changes, and probably should be left alone. Adjust it in-game if it's too annoying. I recommend to use the -w switch to Diablo II to use the game's actual windowed mode. I created a virtual desktop so I could play a game (in this case, Diablo II) within my WM. However, while playing the game, it would change the refresh rate. My screen would turn much brighter, and it wouldn't go back to normal unless I exited the game, although sometimes I would have to revert the change manually. My guess is that it was changed to 85hz, a valid mode for me at lower resolutions, but not at 1280x1024. It seems that the refresh rate should stay at whatever the actual screen is set to, and should only be changed when the game is running full screen.
