I was able to track a crash by inserting a printf() lines in the source (there should be other way to do this, though...), but it looks like further tracking can be difficult since area where problem can be found is wide - whole loader section, string allocating functions, etc. 4) Can this problem be a processor/system/distribution/whatever dependent? 5) Any pointers to fix this problem?
