Using the native dinput.dll from my Windows XP partition (md5sum e028b7125b7b8da90f55b23fc6a20631), the cursor no longer experienced this bug, but was boxed in to a smaller section of the screen. All I can say is that I re-installed the pre-built Ubuntu Gutsy i386 0.9.50 package from here: http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/archive/index.html and FL8 registers and lets me save my work (which is the main thing the demo does not allow: file saves).
