In my opinion using ssh from another computer to kill not responding X is too much. There is much simpler and cleaner way. Try Alt+SysRq+K. This should kill everything in current console including X (even if it doesn't respond anymore). If this doesn't work then you can be sure that you triggered severe driver bug because this SysRq sequence talks to the kernel directly. At the moment packages.ubuntu.com doesn't work, so I cant look what was the driver version in Ubuntu 7.10, but at this version it doesn't worked for sure. And the moment it is with Ubuntu 8.04 the version 2.2.1 - same problem. And with Archlinux I tried at this time some more (and newer) versions (and other X/mesa versions) and they dont worked too. But I just remember something that happend a while ago, the crash occurs while I was voice chatting via mumble. And i couldn't do anything, but mumble was still alive. When I get to the main menu, the outlines of the text textures is readable but the contents is just one color (see attachment 1). The log is full of GL_INVALID_ENUM (0x500). For it, the sample rate needs to be 44100.
