The console application to launch can be changed using the WINECONSOLE environment variable, and wine appends --use-event=xx to that command line when launching the console program. Setting WINECONSOLE to "wineconsole --backend=curses" is ignored, since wineconsole chooses the user backend as soon as the --use-event argument is parsed. This isn't necessary, since the user backend is the default one. By removing the explicit setting of the user backend when parsing the --use-event argument, choosing another backend through the WINECONSOLE environment variable works as expected. However, the converse fallback doesn't work in all cases. If the curses backend fails by being unable to load the curses library, wineconsole doesn't try the window based backend. Since the wineconsole curses backend currently uses poll for waiting for events, the curses backend doesn't work at all on Darwin. One solution would be to switch the curses backend to use select instead of poll, either completely or only on Darwin. A patch that switches the backend to use select in all cases is attached. Reading along down the post I see you have the same issues I have. How do you reproduce "erronous popping tooltips"? I can't seem to provoke it? About the first 1,5 characters: On slow computers I can see the tooltip is drawn in "two steps": 1) A small (20x20px) yellow rectangle with black lining is drawn 2) The rectangle is expanded to fit the text, and the rectangle and text is drawn. This both with comctl32 native and built-in. Looks like wtlib draws and displays an empty tooltiptext-box, and then recycles it after having put text inside it. To me it seems the native comctl32 code has an issue of not clearing some of the tooltip box graphics, and the result is a yellow box masking whatever text sitting in the top-left corner of the final tooltip. Basically it defines how the backbuffer is copied to the front e.g. by performing a memcpy or performing a buffer swap. So you could say that this would remove another FIXME.
