An example is described here - http://blogs.microsoft.co.il/pavely/2011/06/18/getshellwindow-vs-getdesktop… A simple solution would be to check if result of GetShellWindow is about to be null and in that case call get_desktop_window and return that instead. See attachment. I don't have a test for that, but I've encountered an application which hit exactly this problem.
