The patch to blame: https://github.com/wine-compholio/wine-staging/blob/master/patches/oleaut32… When the game has been installed in the iWin game manager you can exit the client and the game can be started directly with the 'tw2_release.ifn' executable. Then another try with wine-staging 2.0.rc3 and I do see the message. I have had that error message on exes that have been only partly downloaded. I'm assuming they're hacking off unnecessary bits from the executable format to get within their size constraints, and wine is getting confused.
