I initially encountered this problem using when I had installed the game with pure wine (no POL). I changed to using POL so I could change wine versions and the like easier. Last night the game was crashing, and I changed to 1.9.13 (no staging) and the game still crashed, so I would want to say it isn't a staging patch problem.
