The game is last known to work with wine version 2.21 from just before the code freeze. You'll need the staging patches. I tried several other versions from the past year, with or without the patches. I couldn't find a development version that would run the game. I find it hard to believe that the code freeze would break the game. I can only guest that one of Sebastian Lackners patches from the 2.0 era had this fixed and now it has been missing from the newer repository of staging patches. The error that I get is slightly different than what Svyatpro reported. I get the following. Error code: E_NOTIMPL Error description: The funtion call is not supported at this time. The wine versions that I have tried are 2.19, 2.22,3.0,3.9 and 3.12.
