The data structures are allocated when the window proc handles 'WM_USER + 100'. That message is sent earlier from the message handler during 'WM_INITDIALOG' handling via 'PostMessage()'. Although the app's message handler contains code to handle palette messages, it's not supposed to see them on a non-palletized device context. You need to check whether the (desktop) device context supports color palettes via 'RC_PALETTE & GetDeviceCaps (hdc, RASTERCAPS)' and only in that case send palette messages.
