It affects the performance of various apps. In one case, 'Total Commander' (https://www.ghisler.com/) it adds over 20 seconds to the startup until the main user-interface is shown. As a lot of work has been done on mfplat, and this is implementing a rather large feature, its not some thing that seems to be easily revertible. The error results from a crash in FAudio, called via xaudio2_8.dll, trying to read through a clobbered pointer value. FFXIV apparently chooses an XAudio2 API version based on the reported Windows version; setting Windows 10 causes the game to load xaudio2_8.dll, while setting Windows 7 causes it to load xaudio2_7.dll. The game starts normally (and audio works properly) in the latter case.
