As I probably haven't started the program in a couple of weeks, it is entirely possible that a bug was introduced in a previous version, and that 5.17 simply did nothing to improve on the situation. ReleaseDC in user32 marks cache DCs as disabled. For user.exe (the 16-bit equivalent), this causes DCs to become inaccessible after release. On Windows, they are still accessible after release.
