Before installing the .NET Framework, I removed wine-mono. I got the following error message when I tried to run the above program: Hello world! Unhandled Exception: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at System.Diagnostics.DiagnosticsConfiguration.Initialize() at System.Diagnostics.DiagnosticsConfiguration.get_IndentSize() at System.Diagnostics.TraceInternal.InitializeSettings() at System.Diagnostics.TraceInternal.WriteLine(String message) at ConsoleApplication3.Program.Main(String[] args) wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address 0x1aa460fd (thread 0009), starting debugger... The problem is with the line "Debug.WriteLine(...)". However, the same application compiled with 32-bit works well. I found out that I got the similar error at other positions when I ran our in-house 64-bit .NET program, even if I don't use Debug.WriteLine(...), so I created the hello-world program to reproduce it. This particular windows program uses SO_REUSEADDR socket option and opens two sockets. Lets call the first one socket A, and the second one Socket B. The SO_REUSEADDR from the Windows application is translated by "wine" into a SO_REUSEADDR in Linux. Unfortunately the behaviour of these is different between Windows and Linux so the Windows application fails to run on Linux under wine. 1 ) On windows: All received unicast UDP packets will arrive on the first opened socket. Thus on socket A. 2) On Linux: All received unicast UDP packets will arrive on the last opened socket. Thus on socket B. The problem is that this windows program only expects to receive unicast UDP packets on socket A, and thus it sees no packets. There are no currently existing socket options in Linux that would permit wine to simulate the Windows behaviour. And thus, the reason I am asking the question here. Please can we add an extra socket option to the Linux socket options such that we can get wine to simulate Windows correctly. I.e. behave like (1) above. Now wine is pretty good at simulating most things Windows throws at it, but socket options is not one of them yet. Also note, that (1) is actually more secure than (2) because it prevents other applications with the same UserID from hijacking the socket. Although (2) is more helpful in more gracefully handling some error edge cases. I assume there are more, but this is the only example that I've reliably run into at the moment: == To Recreate Run Cemu under a 64bit Prefix. Start Mario Kart 8. After Mario announces the game, it will crash. == Workaround Compiling Wine without AVX support (i.e. adding the -mno-avx C/XXFLAG) negates the issue. People won't see this when using distro packages because they'll be compiled using something like -march=x86-64 which doesn't enable any of the AVX options (as they aren't available in all processors). If you compile it yourself using something like -march=native then GCC will enable the AVX functions which in turn triggers this issue. I saw this behaviour on both my old i7-5775C and the i7-8700K which has since replaced it. In case it's relevant, it looks like this problem may have not existed before Wine 3.0 because I've tracked down an old post of my own wherein I stated (regarding the Mario Kart 8 crash on Cemu): ======================= Tried on a brand new Wine 3.2 prefix, same issue (Segmentation fault after the splash screen). Works fine with Staging 2.21. More specifically: 002c:fixme:seh:RtlCaptureStackBackTrace (0, 40, 0x25152ba0, (nil)) stub! 002c:err:seh:call_stack_handlers invalid frame 25153728 (0x116a0000-0x117a0000) 002c:err:seh:NtRaiseException Exception frame is not in stack limits => unable to dispatch exception EDIT: The issue was vcrun2015. Wine-staging didn't need it. The Dialog includes a radiobutton pair for setting the direction of search to be either Up (with U underlined) or Down (D). On Mac OSX, pressing Cmd+U to set the radiobutton only selects the label, but does not actually make the radiobutton be checked. However, the original behaviour on Windows does check the radiobutton. Therefore, the radiobutton has then to be made active either by using the mouse, or using the Space key. The attached screenshot shows the state immediately after pressing Cmd+U. Old versions of Notepad can't open big text files. Instead, Notepad displays a message saying "The file FILENAME is too large for Notepad. Use another editor to edit the file." Wine crashes instead of displaying this message. A giant file can be created in numerous ways. I used a small python script: for i in range(1999999): print i "python script.py > giant.txt" gives a giant file. I tried opening the file using Wine running Notepad and using DOSBox running Windows 3.1 running Notepad. Windows 3.1 is just a normal DOS application, so it runs fine under DOSBox. I'm attaching a PNG file displaying the differences between Wine and DOSBox. That's fine. However, when enabling the console ENABLE_VIRTUAL_TERMINAL_PROCESSING mode on stdout with SetConsoleMode, no error is returned, so the application has no way to detect whether VT sequences are supported or not. This is documented in https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/console/setconsolemode. The port of Turbo Vision at https://github.com/magiblot/tvision is affected by this. When using the Console API, Turbo Vision prefers VT sequences over SetConsoleCursorPosition/SetConsoleTextAttribute for code reusability and performance. Nevertheless, it can fall back to the latter method when SetConsoleMode fails to enable either ENABLE_VIRTUAL_TERMINAL_PROCESSING or DISABLE_NEWLINE_AUTO_RETURN. Since SetConsoleMode does not return error on wineconsole, garbage is shown instead of a colorful interface. STEPS TO REPRODUCE To reproduce the issue on Turbo Vision: (A) - Using the attached 'tvdemo.exe' 1. Run the application on wineconsole. You should see a black-and-white background and escape sequences drawn on the console. 2. Press Alt+F, then D. You should see the command prompt, and the message "VT enabled" at the top, which demonstrates the issue in SetConsoleMode. (B) - Compiling from source code (requires up-to-date CMake and MSVC). 1. Insert the following code after line 63 in source/linux/win32con.cpp (https://github.com/magiblot/tvision/blob/dd4e410e60a34e08053399e346d4ed4e63…) ``` if (supportsVT) cerr << "VT enabled" << endl; else cerr << "VT not enabled: " << GetLastError() << endl; ``` 2. Follow the build instructions at https://github.com/magiblot/tvision/blob/dd4e410e60a34e08053399e346d4ed4e63… 3. Follow the steps in (A). EXPECTED BEHAVIOUR On Windows, support for VT sequences can be disabled by turning on the "Legacy Console" mode. If tvdemo.exe is ran in these conditions, the interface is displayed properly. If entering the command prompt by pressing Alt+F, then D, the message "VT not enabled: 87" is displayed (error 87 stands for ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER), which is what should be shown on wineconsole as well, since it clearly does not support VT sequences. It does, however, still work in Wine up until version 8.3. On the current Wine version, the games launcher starts and updates the game. Afterwards the games .exe starts and you can see it in the process list. However, the game window does not show up. The game developers have introduced a niche Unity store anti-cheat solution with version 450, so this might be an issue. However, since the game still runs in Wine 8.3, there seems to be a way to also have it run on current versions. It is possible to download and install the game without having a game account. The error occurs right after the games .exe starts up, before the login window appears. Also a kernel driver (service) that is installed with WMI "smbios" fails to load but this currently harmless. If we look now in "c:\\windows\\system32\\WBEM" we see the whole stuff installed.
