The program removes it automatically after crashing, but it could be retrieved by placing `while(1);` next to the fixme or by using a Windows machine. The odis.bs.win is resolved by the following algorithm (a comment from the wine code): /* Lookup in <dir>\name.dll * <dir>\name.manifest * <dir>\name\name.dll * <dir>\name\name.manifest * * First 'appdir' is used as <dir>, if that failed * it tries application manifest file path. */ The file it's looking for is in ODIS/odis.bs.win/odis.bs.win.manifest, not in odis.bs.win/odis.bs.win.manifest (name="odis.bs.win"). Where from does Windows get the ODIS part? Well, there's also a file called "Setup.exe.config" with the following content: <configuration> <windows> <assemblyBinding xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1"> <probing privatePath="ODIS"/> </assemblyBinding> </windows> </configuration> It looks that the program should resolve through <dir>/<privatePath>. The simple graphics modes where each particle is a circle work great, with perfect performance. The game requires no install and starts up instantly. The problem is that the higher graphics modes that use shaders do not work. I have attached a picture for an example. The fire effect is visible on top of a black screen. From previous experience I know that this caused when OE-Cake cannot recognize your graphics card, at least that's how it is caused in Windows on real hardware. I've played some pretty advanced games on WINE so I have a feeling this could be fixed somehow. An alternate failure mode that several users have reported is that the shader modes do work, but in the lower graphics modes each circle representing a particle is replaced by a square making it look like Minecraft. A prior bug 46160 was filed about NatSpeak 13 hanging up at the end of installation, and I think that bug might have been fixed in the most recent wine version, and this other bug uncovered. bug 46160 Anyway, the installation stops as of this: err:rpc:rpcrt4_protseq_np_wait_for_new_connection wait failed with error 87 I have posted the installation log. If I kill the installation and then try to start the program, the program works up to a point. It waves hello, and then asks if I want to register the program immediately or run it up to 5 times without registering. When I hit either of these options, the program crashes. Linux native apps tend to do just fine , but there's no way for VR capable windows apps running trough Wine to detect/use VR devices. VR is supposed to be supported on Proton and hacky Wine-Proton hybrids, where first option limits support to apps from Steam and second one is a bit cumbersome to get it working. To solve this issue wine environment could provide thin VR runtime environment that catches calls from apps and direct those to linux native VR runtime that is installed on user system. Wine OpenXR library shouldn't be that complex as it'd be simple 1:1 mapping of OpenXR API. During the process, the installer shows slides with cars and I noticed that on Wine these slides have "stitches". I tried to install the game in a virtual machine with WindowsXP and it didn't have such artifacts. I attached my console output. You can reproduce the bug just by downloading the file and trying to install. I kept my terminal open for more than 3 hours beacuse the process is "running" and if I close the terminal it says that a process is still running and closing the terminal will kill it. Better integration, since the application run under Wine would use the native desktop file pickers, complete with the user's Places sidebar bookmarks and any other customizations they've enacted. 2. More practical security, since Wine could then be run in a filesystem sandbox, with the portal host mounting files/directories into the sandboxed environment on demand. I'd suggest a three-state option exposed through winecfg's Desktop Integration: 1. Opportunistically (Qt's approach to integrating support for XDG portals into QFileDialog provides precedent for making this the default. Uses the portal-based file chooser unless an application requests a combination of OPENFILENAME settings that cannot be represented by the portal API.) 2. Forced (An option for power users to set on a per-application basis to intentionally sacrifice the application's customizations in favour of better integration with the understanding that things may break.) 3. Never (An option for users who prefer consistency between their Windows applications over consistency with the rest of their desktop or have deleted the Z: mapping and configured their Wine prefix around the idea of only working with drive letters.) These high-level preferences could also apply equally well to any other platform's native file chooser, should integration with it be implemented.
