Though, there is a memory leak. Running Hollow Knight: Silksong is a good example here. Opening the game and playing for 10 minutes with no video playing, I see kernel_task is using around 9MB memory. Then I start a new game and letting the video play for ~20 seconds and closing the game, the memory usage of kernel_task spikes ~150MB (and does not get removed after the games closes). It also shows that very often contexts within __wine_syscall_dispatcher_return are returned (which is still wrong, but won't break Unity by itself), and only a fraction of those have the bad sp (which breaks Unity). I still don't understand the point of the `leaq 0x70(%rcx),%rsp`. Why is rsp being set to anything arbitrary at all? This would suggest that either that code block isn't at fault, or we reverted it wrong. As we said, we don't really understand what's happening in the assembly so its possible we reverted it wrong. I managed to get pacman to work fully within MSYS2 by using the same commands on line 26-28 from the link. It seems to be an issue with the signature validation taking forever as noted and the only way to get it to work is setting the sig level to never. The same issue applies to the installer which is why it seems to freeze on the pacman key configuration. After that though it seems to run fine without any issue, at least for me. I want to also note that I am not using docker or any kind of container with wine. I was able to get both MSYS2 and Cygwin working fully in plain wine without any MSYS2-hack patches or installer errors. I would be willing to explain how to get it to work since it seems a lot of people are having trouble with it, though I don't this is the right area to post about it. Game runs fine for long periods, and produces some of these messages below during its run. At some point, the game intermittently hangs, with the hang not being necessarily coincident with any one particular message. It just sort of eventually, intermittently, hangs in the middle of a perfectly good run. Sometimes the game hangs very frequently (after only a few seconds of play) and sometimes it can run successfully for 30 minutes or more without a hang. The hang manifests itself as this: The graphics hang first. The game screen freezes and all of the pixels stay on the screen, unchanging. The game audio continues playing without any hitches or glitches, including, continuing to successfully play background music or long dialogue sequences without stopping. Sometimes, if the hang occurs while the character has an interaction prompt, there may be a brief window where you can still press the interaction button and hear the response audio from having pressed the button, but only the first instance of interaction, after that, nothing more is allowed and the game is truly hung. The console output stops updating, and the game's own "Hades2.log" file stops updating. The following console messages are seen in the console output. But the whole point of Wine is to run games in places they weren't originally intended to run, and amazingly, in this particular case, it actually works. When Crossover 26 was released (including Wine 11.0, and whatever version of vkd3d is included with those two things), it runs Hades 2. I can sometimes play for long periods of time without troubles, there's just the occasional random hang that would be very nice to be able to fix. I wonder if this particular configuration is helping to surface some rare edge-case bugs in vkd3d? Any help or advice would be gleefully accepted. In particular, I'd like to know if there's any way to get more detailed VKD3D logs out of Crossover? I'm attaching a console log output but it's not particularly detailed. Also in the game's installed files, in the Hades2/Content/Shaders folder, there are a bunch of plain-text files, and I wonder if editing any of those could simplify the D3D12 calls and prevent the hangs. Software and hardware information: Game: Hades 2 version 1.133066 The messages, and the hang issue, occur equally in the Windows Steam version of the game, or the Windows Epic Games version of the game. The Epic Games version can run directly without a launcher, without Epic or Steam in memory. The FormatMessageW (winbase.h) function fails if given the valid error code CRYPT_E_NO_MATCH as an argument (see attached code snippet). It returns 0 indicating an error and does not modify the lpBuffer pointer argument. Applications that assume that FormatMessageW will allocate the error message at the memory address lpBuffer is pointing to will crash (like in my case) if they initalized lpBuffer with 0 before. Technically, this is the fault of the application since it assumed that FormatMessageW will not return an error if given a well-formed function call, but wine is missing the error message in the first place and that should be fixed. I'd also like to propose setting lpBuffer to a pointer to an empty string (null character) instead of not modifying it when FormatMessageW fails. (Create a global empty string variable instead of allocating memory each time). This behavior would adhere to the FormatMessageW documentation and would make applications with missing error checks more fail safe in this case. We say "THE" because it does seem like it's experiencing "A" memory leak. It's been, very slowly, increasing in memory use since around hour 2 or so. It's gone from 1.5G to 5.8G after 18 hours. Along with the increase in memory usage, the CPU usage has also climbed, with a setup that's basically just idling(not receiving VRM data or anything) the model stands and moves around in an idle pose. CPU was idling around 12% initially and it's up to an average of 17% now. The slowness of this leak and CPU increase could be on the Warudo side at this point. On a side nite, we tried running the Unity script for several hours, with normal Proton 10, and haven't seen the leak. We likely haven't setup the script properly. The cursor input works fine with the game's UI and the character's head responds to the cursor position as it is moved around, but no "click" input from the mouse makes it to the gameworld environment making the game essentially only playable with the keyboard. One thing I noticed was a very buggy EPIC login screen that can be manually activated and hidden by pressing [Shift]+[F4] that will randomly show up sometimes. Have a Proton 10.0-4 with the revert that's been running Warudo for around 5 hours now, no leak. Again, on rare occasion we've seen the leak hit after a whole day, so it could be a coincidence. At the same time we are testing a Proton-GE 10-32(on another machine) with the script as Adalyn suggested. We're working on putting up a github repo to repeat the Proton build with the revert for Proton-10.0-4 and Proton Experimental Will post links once those are all ready. Because I cannot change that setting on a per-application basis I leave it enabled (any application that expects Windows to decorate its window don't have this issue). The issue is in __wine_syscall_dispatcher which is in dlls/ntdll/unix/signal_x86_64.c. The file being modified there is dlls/ntdll/signal_x86_64.c (note the path). It's probably not that easy to revert the change, since the signal handler has changed since then. We've got a build of GE-Proton with those changes that we're testing now. If any of you have a better way to repeat the issue, like Adalyn, you can test this: https://github.com/madalee-com/proton-ge-custom-unity-leak-fix For GE-Proton we applied the change after the source code gets pulled and before any of the patches are applied. Not sure if these changes make their way through to the final build or not. None-the-less, testing it. For Kron4ek/Wine-Builds, this one is way more clean. We put the changes in place between the git clone and the build. Pretty sure that one should be a valid test. It's building now, though it wont be available for several hours. This one will be available in build artifacts here, if you have a logged in github account, we think. I have another Win16 program I would like to debug in the future (Math Quest with Aladdin; 256-color palette assignment issue under WINE), so I would like to know what tools are suitable in compiling small program replicating the problem, as well as (optionally) tracing such issue for debugging; and comparing system call results with an actual on-Windows run. (As far as I heard: classic MingGW only did Win32. I think maybe since the video processor sets the attributes after the texture was created, it never got to the processor, and the allocator doesn't reinitialize after the flags got set. The game calls waveOutOpen with a NULL lpFormat: 0120:trace:winmm:waveOutOpen (004A0D30, 4294967295, 00000000, 4035c0, 0, 00030000) This results in a crash in the internal Wine function WINMM_OpenDevice because it assumes that lpFormat is never NULL. Testing on Windows indicates that calling waveOutOpen with a NULL lpFormat should only result in the error return value MMSYSERR_INVALPARAM instead of provoking a crash. If I patch Wine to avoid the crash, then the game is able to start successfully. Looking at the winmm traces for waveOutOpen with the change: 0120:trace:winmm:waveOutOpen (004A0D30, 4294967295, 00000000, 4035c0, 0, 00030000) 0130:trace:winmm:waveOutOpen (004A0D30, 4294967295, 00C26680, 4035c0, 0, 00030000) Thread 0120 that calls waveOutOpen improperly does not appear to do anything else with winmm besides call timeGetTime, so I suspect there's an application bug that is ultimately harmless on Windows. Thread 0130 successfully calls waveOutOpen as expected. I also see the same crash when exiting the game CD launcher, and when it is run on Windows, no audio is played on exit, so possibly the application bug is in code that is shared between the launcher and game. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. The ddraw wrapper hides all modes with more than 16 bits per pixel, and it might indeed be necessary to hide 24-bit modes as well as 32-bit modes, but I can't test that because I don't get any 24-bit modes enumerated in ddraw7_EnumDisplayModes even if I run `Xephyr :1 -ac -screen 800x600x24` and start Dominion Wars with WINEDEBUG=+ddraw and DISPLAY=:1. Something in my hardware or software stack must not support 24-bit color. The ddraw wrapper that Christopher mentioned as a workaround has moved to http://www.jiri-dvorak.net/dw/index.html The wrapper was custom-made specifically for running Dominion Wars on modern hardware. This bug is the first problem that it addresses: > Game happily selects 32 bit color mode even if can not handle it properly. This shows as graphical corruption once the intro videos end. Videos themselves are handled by Bink library and work fine. The wrapper hides display modes which do not have 16bit color depth. The attached hack "fixes" it in Wine in the same way that the ddraw wrapper fixes it, but hiding 32-bit modes is obviously wrong and will break other games. Since the same bug happens on Windows, I don't think there's anything we can do in Wine to make it better. The same workarounds that are required to make the game run on Windows are also required on Wine. First, I had an issue where it was missing the WDFLDR.SYS driver because it was needed by one of its components. So I went ahead and downloaded the file for it. Error fixed. Now, starting the game spits what's shown in the attachment, while spawning a debugger window that closes after half a second and has nothing written on it. What caught me the most attention is the "Access denied" error in the console output, however. I don't really know what it's trying to say, because it's not a file or anything that it's trying to access, so I can't tell what's going on. I also built Wine both with debug symbols on and off, but that made no difference in whether said window would remain to show what's going on or not. Weirdly enough, I do remember the game working when I tried it in CachyOS, and it somehow doesn't work here anymore. The issue is caused by GL_FRAMEBUFFER_SRGB remaining enabled while rendering to the default framebuffer (FBO 0), leading to a double gamma/sRGB conversion in some Wayland/EGL pipelines. Disabling GL_FRAMEBUFFER_SRGB only when rendering to the default framebuffer fixes the color output. Environment Wine: wine-git (tested on 11.x, reproducible on current master) Backend: winewayland.drv (Wayland native, not XWayland) GPU: AMD (Mesa) Compositor: wlroots-based (qtile Wayland) EGL backend in use Application tested: Roon (Chromium/CEF-based UI, OpenGL rendering) Observed behavior Colors appear faded / washed out Gamma looks incorrect (as if double sRGB conversion occurs) Issue only occurs under Wayland/EGL Colors are correct: Under X11/XWayland Or if GL_FRAMEBUFFER_SRGB is manually disabled for FBO 0 Root cause hypothesis Some Wayland/EGL compositors already perform colorspace handling for the window surface. If GL_FRAMEBUFFER_SRGB remains enabled when rendering to the default framebuffer, the pipeline applies sRGB conversion twice: App → GL_FRAMEBUFFER_SRGB → EGL/Compositor colorspace → Display This results in desaturated output. Minimal fix Disable GL_FRAMEBUFFER_SRGB only when binding the default framebuffer (FBO 0), while preserving the application's requested sRGB state for non-default FBOs. Changing tabs does not update the window correctly. You can see the layout changing near the bottom or right edge but the first tab is always shown on top. Tested with Camera Raw 9.10 + Wine 9.9 (yes, newer versions should be used) + KWin/XWayland. Below is an explanation of why the Camera Raw dialog window loses focus under Wine’s X11 driver. The attached patch file fixes the issue for Camera Raw. I have not tested the impact of the patch on other applications. What happens: When a popup appears, KWin/XWayland sends WM_TAKE_FOCUS for a transient popup window. Wine’s X11 driver treats this as permission to promote that popup to the Win32 foreground window (via set_focus() → NtUserSetForegroundWindow()), deactivating the main dialog. Camera Raw reacts to deactivation by disabling controls. Example trace pattern: ... trace:event:handle_wm_protocols got take focus msg for 0x????? ... (style 94800001), focus=0x2137a, active=0x2137a, fg=0x2137a trace:event:set_focus setting foreground window to 0x????? ... The trace was captured under XWayland using: env DISPLAY=:0 WAYLAND_DISPLAY= \ WINEDEBUG=+event,+x11drv,+window,+focus,+msg \ WINEPREFIX=<path/to/prefix_dir> \ wine <path/to/Photoshop.exe> &> wine_tooltip_trace.log The important debug channels for reproducing the issue: +event (WM_TAKE_FOCUS handling) +x11drv (X11 focus/activation paths) +window, +focus (Win32 activation/foreground changes) Why a heuristic approach is needed: Filtering only tooltips_class32 is insufficient: in failing runs, the windows receiving WM_TAKE_FOCUS are not always standard tooltip windows. However, these windows share a common "transient popup" signature (WS_POPUP with WS_EX_TOOLWINDOW, not WS_EX_APPWINDOW, typically WS_EX_TOPMOST or without a caption), and should not become the Win32 foreground window. Proposed fix: In dlls/winex11.drv/event.c WM_TAKE_FOCUS handling, detect tooltips and other transient popup windows and avoid promoting them to the Win32 foreground. Instead, keep the foreground on the currently active window. This was introduced in wine-9, so that tracks with all the user reports that this starts happening in proton-9. I want to try writing an intentional reproducer for this that's faster than the test cases we have, though since it's a race I don't know if it will be fast enough to be incorporated into an actual test suite. @Madalee Yeah, Linux doesn't handle progressive memory leaks well. Instead of expected categorized views for plugins, behaviors, effects, events and expression dictionary (where I've noticed it so far) they are all displayed as a whole in their own window, making navigation and selecting the correct item harder. I'm naming it "probably generic problem" as I've noticed it in the Construct Classic's insert object dialog as well, and I suspect that every Windows program making use of this exact element has the same issue, as it is may not be fully implemented in Wine's code. To see reproduced problem in application itself: 1. Install the latest Wine development version (11.3) along with Mono & Gecko dependencies (as it has requested me to do); 2. This leak usually doesn't happen quickly, though we've seen apps leak in as little as an hour, we've seen it not manifest until around 30 hours. We believe we've seen this in other unity games as well. Basically, anything unity that we run on Linux through Proton newer than 8 seems to leak... eventually. As Hoshino Lina pointed out, the common thread among vtubers is that we often stream for many hours. We think this extended time with Unity is why it tends to affect us more than most users and why this very serious bug often goes unnoticed. Not sure how this is for other users, but for us when a Unity app does this, our whole system hangs, sometimes for several minutes while we wait for the memory goblin to rescue us by killing apps. We're happy to provide any additional details that can help, or run testing/debug versions of Wine and provide logs. Because these threads are spawned outside of Wine's lifecycle management, they do not receive the standard Windows FPU environment initialization. Specifically, new threads inherit the host's default Linux FPU state rather than the Windows-standard FPU Control Word (0x037f) and MXCSR (0x1f80). When Gecko’s layout engine (xul.dll) performs transcendental math operations (such as FSINCOS), it triggers a SIGFPE (translated to a 0xc000008f Inexact Result exception) because the precision exceptions are not correctly masked. Steps to Reproduce: Run an application utilizing wine-gecko with Direct2D SVG rendering enabled (e.g., Solid Edge 2026 Ribbon UI). Trigger a complex SVG render or layout calculation that invokes transcendental math instructions in xul.dll. The application will crash with 0xc000008f (Inexact Result) or a SIGFPE when a math instruction is executed on a thread spawned by mozglue. Actual Result: Threads created via mozglue have uninitialized or "dirty" FPU status/control flags, leading to catastrophic floating-point exceptions in Gecko components. Expected Result: Every thread, including those spawned by mozglue, should have an initialized FPU state consistent with Windows defaults (0x037f) to prevent exceptions during standard math operations. For whatever reason, the first commit that allows the buttons to work is deaf0891b096628cf99e58834c39a45a6c99c54c, available in wine-7.10. However, there are other issues with the application controls that are not fully addressed until the comctl32 separation with commit 541d9be5ecda1bc0c8fce22f1318bf5d72572327, available in wine-10.17. However when games (especially Unity games) try to use video rendering, the videos along with audio simply do not work. According to 3Shain, the current implementation of MediaFoundation has an issue where a miscflag (D3D11_RESOURCE_MISC_FLAG) does not get set, and as such DXMT fails to render anything.
