If I manually alter the code to pass `NULL` to `pszOut`, the count is updated to the actual length of the command string. We've since addressed this more properly as part of a larger D2D1 patch series (13 patches total, posted at https://github.com/robbert-vdh/yabridge/issues/413#issuecomment-3868060550) The font issue specifically is handled in patch 2/13 ("d2d1: Force NATURAL rendering mode for better font quality"). The core problem is that ALIASED and OUTLINE modes produce poor results with Wine's FreeType backend — OUTLINE generates empty glyphs, and ALIASED produces unreadable pixelated text. The fix forces NATURAL when either of those modes is returned by GetRecommendedRenderingMode(). I understand this is still more of a targeted fix than a proper implementation of outline rendering and AA modes. The broader patch series does include shader-based geometry antialiasing (patch 1/13), which replaces the hard `clip()` calls in the pixel shader with smooth alpha blending — so geometry AA is functional with those patches applied. But improving the DWrite outline rendering path itself to produce correct glyphs is beyond our current scope. So maybe it would be possible to implement that windows API using the inhibitor API if available. But even then, the application would need to use ti. Happening at least since V9.0 Renderer: dgVoodoo 2 to DXMT 0.73 Basically, if I set the resolution to the maximum in MCSM (2880x1800), the cursor becomes smaller, moves slower and importantly the bounding box for the cursor becomes halved such where the bottom-right corner is now situated at the middle of the screen, so the cursor can only go from top-right to middle of the screen. Note this all happens with High Resolution mode on, The cursor's movement speed, bounding box and size are correct when the resolution is set at the minimum (800x600) resolution. The issue comes from window focus not matching Windows, and what the application expects. The application creates five windows each time it opens a menu. Four of the windows are transparent layered windows (WS_EX_TRANSPARENT | WS_EX_LAYERED), which are used for some unknown app-specific purpose. The fifth window is a classic WS_EX_TOOLWINDOW / WS_POPUP window. They are all created / shown / stacked in a specific order by the application. The windows are shown with SW_SHOWNA which is supposed to show the windows on screen but not activate them. We implement this through the EWMH X11 protocol, by setting _NET_WM_USER_TIME = 0 property before mapping the window (https://specifications.freedesktop.org/wm/latest/ar01s05.html#id-1.6.16) This is meant to tell the window manager not to activate it upon mapping, neither through XSetInputFocus, nor WM_TAKE_FOCUS. Yet, we still seem to sometimes receive WM_TAKE_FOCUS events, which we need to respond to by activating the window, as it may come from a user action without any way for us to tell. The application then gets confused as it receives focus change messages when it does not expect so. This then varies a bit depending on which window gets activated and it seems like it only decides to close the menu if the non-layered window is, possibly assuming that the window got activated by a mouse click on a menu item. > This happens in a KWin Wayland session but not in an X11 session nor did it happen using IceWM. That does mean it could be an issue with XWayland and not Wine. This seems to be the reason for the WM_TAKE_FOCUS we receive, and it looks like that it also depends on where the window is being opened. I can reproduce this on XWayland with GNOME, with the attached test, which passes on windows or with a X11 session. It looks like that if a window is created above, or moved above right after mapping, the currently active window, it gets the WM_TAKE_FOCUS every time, regardless of _NET_WM_USER_TIME value. If the window is mapped elsewhere, it doesn't. The change from that commit only touches the front buffer rendering emulation code path, which explains that at least. It seems to me that the change is correct nonetheless, and perhaps the NVK driver is crashing because we are actually trying to blit front buffer to back whereas we were using empty/invalid coordinates before. It doesn't seem that there's any crash there, so it probably does later and I suspect it is because although the EGL devices are mostly correctly enumerated, the failure to create any GL context makes it fail to get any name for them, and the NULL name later on causes a crash when populating the display devices. It doesn't look like there's any way to distinguish these devices from other devices except from the context creation failure, so probably we need to try creating one at least once. Fwiw we could maybe try other ways to get names for the devices (like using EGL_EXT_device_query_name), but lets be safe for now and ignore the devices altogether, they won't be usable for OpenGL anyway. He claims he wants apps like wine to use a inhibition API though that seems like it would hurt non-gnome users who want to limit screen time or something. I am reluctant to suggest humoring him, but if there were an option in wine for gnome users to activate this inhibition API thing it would help ubuntu users and other distros using Gnome play games despite ebassi's sabotage. Previously, the IDE displayed its editors and views as tabs within a single main window (similar to applications like Visual Studio Code). After the update, these tabs are now opened as separate top-level windows instead of being embedded as tabs in the main application window. This behavior only occurs when running the application with Wine. On native Windows systems, the IDE still behaves correctly and shows tabs as expected. Expected behavior: Editors and views should be displayed as tabs within the main IDE window, as before the update. Actual behavior: Each tab is opened as an individual window, breaking the intended tabbed workflow and making the IDE difficult to use. Regression: Yes. The tabbed interface worked correctly with earlier versions of the IDE under Wine. The issue appeared immediately after the vendor updated the application. Additional notes: The application is proprietary, so source code is not available. The issue seems related to how the updated IDE handles tabbed/docked windows or window embedding under Wine. I think I can probably make the service only attach to a desktop when it needs it (right now, only to show error messages) and detach itself when it is just running in the background (the service does not need to show any windows during normal operation, the interactive flag is mostly there to be able to open DirectX). So it would not be sufficient to make SERVICE_INTERACTIVE_PROCESS services non-system since that would defeat the purpose. I'm guessing that without the winstation exclusion logic, explorer.exe would also keep the session alive. So perhaps explorer.exe itself should be marked system, and then the winstation logic not applied to SERVICE_INTERACTIVE_PROCESS services (despite them otherwise still being a System process)? This happens with the Nouveau Vulkan driver/Mesa 25.3.4. and with Nvidia binary 580.126.09 as well. Reverting the following commit on top of Wine-11.2 fixes the problem for me: commit 7be265ec89a89db65f0b13f9b7c20c34573b6bb4 wined3d: Avoid some invalidation when texture states are set redundantly. The game is an oldie from 1998, but it runs reasonably well in Wine. There is no such problem with the Nvidia binary driver 580.126.09. This happens in Wayland (KDE Plasma 6.5.5) and under X11 (XFCE) too. Switching to the GLX backend resolves the crash under X11 and XWayland, but not when using the native Wayland driver. Reverting the following commit on top of Wine-11.2 fixes the problem for me: commit 6802b32b3859e3b1c3e59bdb462d373fcf0608cf opengl32: Fix front buffer emulation glBlitFramebuffer parameters. There is nothing obvious in the terminal. I'm mostly using the binary Nvidia driver, I just happened to bump into this bug. Let me know if you need any further log. I'm attaching here the output of my 'glxinfo -B' and 'eglinfo -B'. I *think* the vga card is properly recognized and used by the OS with the open source driver. A system process is not allowed to keep a desktop alive, per the logic in server/winstation.c. When such a process tries to create a window, such as by calling MessageBoxA(), it ends up in winstation_init(), which creates a desktop and assigns it to the current process. This launches explorer.exe. However, this desktop isn't actually ever owned by the service, because it is a system process. This is an unstable state. If any other process/thread is assigned/released a desktop at this point, server/winstation.c will kill explorer.exe by sending it WM_CLOSE. This a race. Sequence of events: - Service Process starts - It becomes a system process after running the main service dispatcher - Service calls MessageBoxA() - X11DRV_create_win_data -> init_clip_window() grabs the clip_window ID from explorer.exe - Some other process/thread owns a desktop and becomes system, exits, or whatever. - The close_timeout triggers, and explorer.exe is told to exit - The clip_window is destroyed - Any clip_window operations (such as ungrab_clipping_window() via X11DRV_ClipCursor) trigger a BadWindow X11 error and kill the service This is happening on Proton partially due to some Proton changes (that cause the sequence of events above to actually happen almost 100% reliably), but I believe the fundamental problem exists in vanilla Wine. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. I was succeeded with bootstrap instead of LXC because bootstrap keeps root files after fail, so it is possible to chroot and install 32-bit kbd from Debian stable, then continue normal installation. Also, I was able to build inside 32-bit chroot only with --enable-archs=i386 So the average Ubuntu user can't just do bisecting following these instructions. I tested the application on Windows 2000 and Wine 11, using iso file from archive.org mounted as a CD‑ROM. Based on the results, there appears to be a difference in behavior between Wine and Windows 2000. On Windows 2000, the VOL command reports the volume label as DKMM_ILSC, and FindFirst returns DKMM_ILS.C. On Wine 11.0, both VOL and FindFirst return the same value: DKMM_ILSC. I modified the INT21_FindHelper function so that strings longer than eight characters are converted into the standard 8.3 filename format. After this change, the CD seems to detected correctly. However, the application still does not start properly. I managed to reproduce it with the Windows version of Surge XT just now though it took a bit longer than with the Toontrack plugins. You don't need to use yabridge to reproduce it and the standalone version of Surge XT will do. https://surge-synthesizer.github.io/downloads/ To reproduce the issue you need to just keep on clicking the highlighted buttons until the popups start to open less reliably. With Surge XT it seemed to take a few minutes before it happened and I'm not certain if closing and reopening the program speeds it up. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59372 --- Comment #13 from uvos <devnull(a)uvos.xyz> --- Since wine hangs on initialization i can not run "wine reg add "HKCU\\Software\\Wine\\X11 Driver" /v UseEGL /d N /f" Wine hangs before the prefix is ever finishes initializing so there is no registry to change anyhow (unless i create one with wine 11.0) Eglinfo dosent show the mi100 devices at all - this is because it attempts to create a graphics context too and just skips the whole device when this fails. The main problem here is that wine seams to attempt to init all devices and hangs when context creation fails, if you make other egl clients try and use the mi100 for graphics (with DRI_PRIME and the like) the application in question (like eglgears) will simply exit with error: ``` $ DRI_PRIME=1 eglgears_wayland EGL_VERSION = 1.5 radeonsi: error: can't create a graphics context on a compute chip EGLUT: failed to create context ``` The main problem here is not that wine fails to identify the mi100 as a device to avoid, but that it hangs when context creation fails, which could happen for many other reasons than that the device happens to not support the requested configuration as is the case here. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. I waited for 5 minutes, but the process still didn't exit. The problem happens only when using the native Wayland driver (DISPLAY= wine div.exe), but it is not reproducible under XWayland or when running the game under X11 (XFCE). This was reproduced with NVIDIA driver 580.126.09 and with NVK / Mesa 25.3.4. Running the game under Weston 14.02 also triggers this bug. Both the Steam and GOG.com versions are affected, but the original demo version is not. Disabling CSMT resolves the problem for me. FWIW, it was commit de0fc7fd (from Wine-10.11) that enabled the game to display properly in Wayland, and the issue was already present then. Prior to that commit, the game displayed only a black screen while running; however, navigating blindly to the 'Quit' button in the menu resulted in a clean shutdown. Plain terminal output doesn't reveal anything, let me know if any debug log would help. I've done some debugging and I think I've narrowed down the issue: Page fault seems to occur because kernelbase.dll LocalLock function returns NULL and mfc80u.dll doesn't check the returned pointer before using it. LocalLock checks the validity of the memory section by executing a dummy write. However the memory section it is called with points to .rsrc section which is read-only. So, LocalLock rejects it and returns NULL to indicate failure. I've got around the issue for now by modifying toolbox.exe's resource section to be read-write. This allows the application to launch. Run the 'winecfg' command and check on the 'Libraries' tab that 'd3d8' is not set to 'native only' in the list. It should be absent from the list, or 'native, builtin' or 'builtin only'. Note that if you use the same prefix for multiple apps and one of them require native d3d8, changing the global setting for 'd3d8' may break that other application. To set different library settings for different applications, you have to add the application executables to the 'Application' tab list in winecfg and select that application in the list before switching to the 'Libraries' tab.
