This is a targeted MSVC-pattern compat shim. Wine's d3d9 is built with MinGW GCC, which emits a different prologue than MSVC; some games scan d3d9 for the exact MSVC vtable-init pattern as a "genuine D3D9" check. Hardcoding an MSVC-style marker is unlikely to be acceptable upstream, since the proper long-term fix is matching MSVC code generation. Hopefully this is acceptable by staging though since it unblocks at least 1 game. Affected game and repro are in the bug description (Battle for Middle-earth Online Battle Arena, https://bfmeladder.com/download) PoC (attachment 80843) shows the scan failing on unpatched Wine and passing on real Windows / Wine + this patch. Adds an 18-byte MSVC-pattern marker after d3d9_device_vtbl in dlls/d3d9/device.c plus a conformance test in dlls/d3d9/tests/device.c. Wine's d3d9.dll is MinGW GCC-built and doesn't contain the MSVC C++ vtable-init byte sequence (c7 06 ?? 89 86 ?? 89 86) that some closed-source overlay/hook libraries scan for to locate the IDirect3DDevice9 vtable. Concrete affected case: bfmeladder.com's BFME Online Arena. Its dinput8.dll proxy fails to install hooks on Wine, so the Arena's 30-second Automated Matchmaking Test times out with "the overlay didn't load in 30 seconds." Repro: install https://bfmeladder.com/download under Wine staging, sign in, pick any game and patch, watch the test fail. Proposed patch attached: 18-byte packed const struct after d3d9_device_vtbl in .rdata, reproducing the pattern with &d3d9_device_vtbl as imm32. Not referenced by any Wine code. "If you report a bug you are a troll or a bot" Typical Gen-Z response. Gen-X and Millenials were happy to head off regressions. Because to us Opensource was a crusade. We cared about it. Now opensource is a resume-pad. Gen-Z just gaslights everyone into believing the bug is not there, or if it is definitivly shown to be there "doesn't matter" because "no one plays that boomer shit anylonger" "ok UNC" "ok BOOMER" etc. >Note: Same stuff in the newer "opensource" (paid by govt/corp, not made by hackers) projects run by Gen-Z (and excluding "mysoginist" gen-X and millenials) newer-Gnome, Systemd requiring new apps, etc Anyway I've been programming opensource software since 2001/2002 or so (perl, C). So I've done text, 2d, and 3d game work all these years for opensource. I posted the screenshots of the game not working in both MacOSX wine 10.1 and not working in Debian LTS wine 5 (segfault). Yet you still call me a troll. I am a licensed attorney and I can go to the federal court and file a diversity suit against you and your employeers. Would you like that? I also now can't download libpng etc suddenly "404" (no one else gets a 404 in #macports ) due to someone reporting my IP as a bot. I will sue you for that too. And your employer. And I'm told on the wine IRC to "just use newer version!!!" and called a troll. Then banned there Then suddenly my ip is on a "this is a bot" list and I can't even download the needed libs to even test wine 11 anymore (since cloudfare thinks I'm a bot after talking with #wine and #debian on libera irc) Then klined again. Then banned here. Then banned here again. I do not understand why a working project such as wine, which under gen-x and millenial programmers (gen-x who created the project): is now broken for the old games for-which it was originally created (yes I remeber); and this is treated lightly "oh we've moved on from that" Millenial and Gen-X projects have all been maliciously stolen from the actual programmers all across the opensource-landscape. The men who wrote the code banned for social crimes that westerners believe in, from their own projects. I remeber when opensouce followed the hacker ethos. and did NOT obey ANY laws. and was ALL Men. and was proud of it. It was "show us the code". Now you new people ban people for not obeying your social mores or the views you enforce.
