That's the wrong type casting bug of the patch. This patch also fixes 2 demuxer cleanup bugs, but all 3 are basic/obvious memory management errors. Like, why the rust people are not giving us a break. Please apply it and release it. The code it touches is 100% broken. This is not cosmetic. Patch speaks for itself. Initially, thinking it was a quartz/ddraw bug, I started looking into those but the decoding process seemed to work perfectly, as if the videos were instead just never presented to screen. I patched quartz to dump more information during presentation (see attachments) and it showed the following: DIAG hwnd 00030066 visible 1 style 0x56000000 exstyle 0 window (0,0)-(1920,1080) client (0,0)-(1920,1080) DIAG parent 0003005E root 0003005E root_visible 1 root_rect (0,0)-(1920,1080) foreground 0003005E 0x56000000 should be WS_CHILD | WS_VISIBLE | WS_CLIPSIBLINGS | WS_CLIPCHILDREN, and parent == root == 0003005E, so the video renders into a visible child window covering the whole of the game's toplevel window, which is the foreground window and is in D3D9 exclusive fullscreen. Adding x11drv logging then shows that while quartz creates the video window as a toplevel, the game calls IVideoWindow::put_Owner() on it, which makes it a child. Its content therefore renders offscreen, to be composited back by X11DRV_client_surface_present(), but that function returns early for any window that isn't the toplevel while the toplevel is in exclusive fullscreen, so the frames are just dropped. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. I've tested the fix it has provided, and it has been working for me. Apologies for not providing something that I personally dug into and identified, and if providing LLM-generated finds is not allowed, I also apologize of that. This particular bug was found while using the Shadowrun 5e character creation app called "Chummer5a" wihch is a .NET character generator that I am running through WINE. accum_mouse_motion() in dlls/win32u/input.c accumulates raw mouse motion frames into a fixed 64-entry buffer (struct raw_mouse { UINT count; POINT data[64]; }, embedded in struct user_thread_info). If info->mouse_motion happens to be empty (dwFlags == 0 && mouseData == 0) at the exact moment accum_mouse_motion() calls this to flush an about-to-overflow buffer, the function returns without resetting the counter. The caller has no way to know the reset didn't happen, and proceeds to memcpy into the buffer and increment the counter anyway - now starting from a value that's already at (or past) capacity. Every subsequent raw mouse frame writes one slot further out of bounds. In our reproduction the counter reached 73 (9 slots, i.e. 72 bytes, past the 64-entry/512-byte buffer) before the overflow reached and corrupted session_data, a pointer field later in the same struct user_thread_info that's dereferenced on essentially every call into the shared message-queue code (get_shared_queue() and friends in dlls/win32u/winstation.c). Once that pointer is corrupted, the affected thread SIGSEGVs on every subsequent call to those functions, recovers, and retries - producing a CPU-pinned livelock rather than a clean crash, since Wine's own signal handler catches and recovers from the fault each time. Reproduction: we were not able to isolate a minimal, deterministic repro - it depends on the exact timing/sequence of real mouse input (specifically, a run of raw motion frames with no accompanying regular move/button/wheel data landing right as the 64-entry accumulator is about to overflow). In our case it surfaced as an intermittent CPU-pinning hang in a .NET application under Wine, recurring anywhere from under a minute to about ten minutes into a session, confirmed via a hardware watchpoint on the corrupted field across multiple independent captures (all showing the same raw_mouse.count pattern: 9 past capacity). Many 16-bit games, especially the old Windows 3.1 games like "whack-a-mole", "Bricklayer" and many others I've tried simply don't work at all in Wine. Since there's too many 16-bit games to list, it makes sense to write one bug report covering the same problem i.e. problems running 16-bit games. Try some yourself from here: http://members.chello.at/theodor.lauppert/games/win16.htm Here I've found that the 32-bit version of tetris works in Wine, but the 16-bit version does NOT work at all (try it yourself from this link, you get to download both the 32-bit and 16-bit versions respectively, at the bottom of that page): http://members.chello.at/theodor.lauppert/games/tetrisjr.htm I'm pleased to say that the Ballistic (Paddle) game appears to work: http://www.classicdosgames.com/genre/paddle.html This bug report may appear trivial and not important, but playing old Windows games appeals to some people. There are a few problems with this: 1. The same BCryptSignHash with RSA 512 key and PSS padding on Win10 or Win11 fails with STATUS_INVALID_PARAMETER. That's a behavior difference with Windows. 2. WINEDEBUG=trace+win,x11drv After starting Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, when the intro video starts playing, the video does not show, but instead the screen is completely white. The sound does work, however. If one skips the intro, then the game works as normal. I think the same bug happens with GTA3 as well, but I haven't done much testing with GTA3. The intro video does work on some older Wine versions. The regression seems to be caused by commit ae3cd29bd513f7c1cffca95e9c0c8c8304eeb12c. The attached trace log is with WINEDEBUG=trace+win,x11drv. Some quartz- related present errors are visible in the log, but they may be a red herring, since they are visible even in the wine versions that do work. I grepped the log with grep -v NtUserGetKeyState, because the log was full of NtUserGetKeyState spam. The log is from version wine-11.14. I tried the xdotool selectwindow windowunmap trick that works with games like Post Mortem, but it doesn't seem to work here. It seems that the white window is not hiding the real window behind it.
