Perhaps it's related somehow to warping the mouse in dinput/mouse.c?

A patch implementing Find is ready, but it wasn't accepted because of size and
extent of changes involved (given upcoming 0.9 release). You may find it here:

This is a known problem with RO. The easiest way to fix it (pending the real fix
in Wine) is to configure RO to run in full-screen mode.

This bug can be marked as 'LATER' to revisit this problem once Wine's ALSA
driver becomes more stable and complete. It is true - at this time - that
ALSA's OSS emulation works far better (when wineserver is reniced to 19).
Thanks!

On another note, the bug status should hopefully be updated too to unressolved...

Hi, I'm sorry to say that this bug is back - as of CVS 23/10/2005. (I downloaded
using the European CVS server if this info is any use). 60% of my installs
(which should normally pass without a hitch) are failing with the same error
message that 'the directory is not valid.'
Is this patch actually been committed to CVS yet? Because if so I'm afraid it is
still a problem and has not been fully resolved.

I just installed the new Debian version as given by Jonathan, thanks for that. I
now have Wine 20050725. The problem is unchanged.

I can reproduce this bug on Mac OS X 10.4 when remotely logged into an Ubuntu machine. The bug
only happens for me when I move my mouse pointer over an X11 window from the remote system; the
application runs normally when I keep my mouse elsewhere. Additionally, X11 applications run on my
local Mac work normally.
I run 20050930 wine built from source.
The error message is:
X Error of failed request: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 38 (X_QueryPointer)
Resource id in failed request: 0x57
Serial number of failed request: 316
Current serial number in output stream: 316
