Here's an example, using wine's wcmd, enter this: dir >blah /b Obviously, this is stupid formatting. However, there is a behavioural difference between wine and windows. windows generates just a bare list (the /b option). Wine ignores the parameters after the pipe, and thus generates a full dir listing.
