Do you have some strange configuration or DLL overrides?
it does not try loading krnl386 as builtin, only as native.

I found some programs off CD that do it as well, such as GTA and GTA London binaries

I built today's CVS with GCC 4 and GCC 3.2 (separately, of course): both
produced the same results as with the 0.9 RPM.
Just a guess: Could it be my dual Opteron CPUs?

This just came to my mind: AFAIK, Wine has basic support for device drivers
these days, for SafeDisk and similar copy protection schemes? So, Wine can
support device drivers to a certain extent? I assume the element5 VxD is
somewhat similar to SafeDisk drivers, as there's no real/ special hardware
involved, so maybe it would work with Wine?
The second thing is - are regular services really standard executables? The
one from element5 ESD is. And it's possible to start it with Wine - so, maybe
it isn't a real service? If that's the case, it might work, if ZBrush would
even start up...

Can you attach a +loaddll trace ?
And what Wine package do you run as OpenGL32.DLL should be packaged with Wine ?
