Summary: parallel port access is slow due to high cpu usage
(eprom burner)
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-binary
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: pkk(a)spth.de
Whe I burn EPROMs with the willem eprom burner (software at
http://www.willem.org/ZIP/epr097ja.zip) wine needs a lot of cpu power. Parallel
port access speed scales with CPU speed.
I run wine as root and have added the following registry keys:
[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-4\Software\Wine\VDM]
[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-4\Software\Wine\VDM\Ports]
"read"="0x278-0x27f,0x378-0x37f"
"write"="0x278-0x27f,0x378-0x37f"
[HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-4\Software\Wine\VDM\ppdev]
"378"="/dev/parport0"

Oops, I just noticed: When I just wrote "(jack in realtime mode)" I meant
non-realtime mode. Sorry.

Have you tried setting the version to Windows 9x in winecfg? That may be all
that is required. Wine now defaults to W2k as its version to emulate.

I think there's something weird going on here. I tried:
Winamp 2.0
jackd 0.100.1
Wine 20050725 Gentoo ebuild
on my PII 750
I tried several mp3s and wavs, and all but one of them exhibited the following
behaviour (jack in realtime mode):
* No Error messages
* *Lots* of skipping, such that a five minute track finishes in seconds
* Lots of new jack outputs showing up in qjackctl's connection window
However one file played OK (other than some buffer underrun messages at the
end). I'm wondering if it might be because it's mono, whereas the others are
stereo. No time to test this theory now though.
In realtime mode I again got good playback for my mono file, but no sound at all
from the others. On pressing play I get these errors:

Thanks. With the Windoes version set to 98 it does work as before.
Should this bug report stay open since it should work with higher Windows
versions too? I tested it on a Windows XP system; it started normally there (I
didn't test if it would write EPROMS since the Windows XP machine doesn't have a
parallel port).

message trace for wine 2004.14
Here is a similar trace for the same app, but running in Wine 2004.12 where it
works okay. The two traces cannot easily be diffed, but perhaps an experienced
eye
can see the real difference and why 0.9.1 is going wrong.

message trace for wine 0.9.1
Here is a log of WINEDEBUG=+message running on Wine 0.9.1, and thus shows
window management related traffic to give an idea of what the app is doing.
I can't see any clear failures in this, but then I'm not really sure what to
look for.
