It uses a rather strange (but clever) mechanism to check the media. To quote filesplit.org: "StarForce3 uses different checks (angular values). If these values are the same that Starforce3 checks, then the copy will run flawlessly, otherwise it won’t work. 90% of CD-R media when burned have these values shifted and StarForce3 recognises this and prevents the software from loading." AFAIK, each lot of CDs pressed gets scanned using special software that creates a serial number based on the angular values. The values are different for each stencil (correct word? - the 'stamp' used to press the CD/ DVD). This number is the CD key that ships with the game, and is used to decrypt parts of the game (every part of the game could be encrypted that way, including data files). Mark, try running jackd with a different rate (-r 44100?). Setting -r 44100 allowed me to play the majority of mp3s that are at that rate, with jack in non-realtime mode.
