As a long time windows user and recent wine user I have to say that wine needs
support added for windows file associations (the ability to start one program
with another). I've only used wine since 20050525. Did it ever have such
ability? The program associations are faithfully reproduced in the registry so
all we have to do is have wine check there first and see what to launch.
There is a drawback to automated program launching, however: If you enable such
things as windows scripting we will wind up having the same automatic execution
vulnerabilities as windows. However, with wine we have extra freedom to, for
example, modify this behavior. Maybe put some choices into winecfg, such as
"allow file association? []always [x]confirm []never"

Do real apps actually pass null pointers like this?
Maybe this bug is not tickled by any code in the wild...
lowering priority.
