Summary: XLView (Excel viewer) can no longer open any files
Product: Wine
Version: 20050111
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: critical
Priority: P2
Component: wine-binary
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: wine(a)wine.lka.org.lu
Since 20050111 (but still continuing until 20050628), XLView can no longer
open any files. When I attempt to open a file, I get the following error
message in a dialog box:
'myfile.xls' cannot be accessed. The file may be read-only, or you may be
trying to access a read-only location. Or, the server the document is stored
on may not be responding.
The file is writable, it happens no matter where I store it (tried /tmp, c:\,
and c:\My Documents), and with two different files.
The same works flawlessly with wine 20041201

It detects DirectX at 6.0, and hardcodes the video memory at 64MB.

umm .. after some more testing i found version 20050429 to work (I messed around
with winetools and winesetuptk in my .wine dir before installing this version,
so your mileage may vary)

I am getting the exact same problem when trying to run wintach with wine
(http://www.sysopt.com/tosch/wintach.html). It worked for a while, but stopped
after a version upgrade a few weeks ago. alas i cannot remember which version i
had before where it worked, and i cannot seem to find a workign version anymore.

Results of further investigation:
The problem only occurs if the file open dialog shows previews of the presentations.
I test a centralized installation (i.e. MS-Office is installed somewhere in
/usr/local). But all users have full access to the whole subdir. I cannot
reproduce this error when MS-Office is installed in ${HOME}/.wine.

Thanks for the idea. Tried that, but it doesn't work either. But the message
is different now:

The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because
the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a
different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded
exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch.
Note: Yes, the patch is correct. It is a patch to go from Notes 6.5.2 to 6.5.3
and I do indeed have Notes 6.5.2 installed.

Should be "typelib" but in your case I think it isn't needed at all. But why I
cannot see any loaddll: messages? Maybe you have made a typo, as shown in the
quote: WINDEBUG <-> WINEDEBUG.

Hmm, an app uses MSI engine. Maybe try installing native engine:
http://wiki.winehq.org/NativeMsi
But then you will need add "msi, msiexec.exe=n" to your WINEDLLOVERRIDES
env-variable.

So you are not sure if you will be able to find the same conditions to make QW
install again?
> It's safe to ignore the "reboot after installation" messages, isn't it?
Have no opinion, but I will allways use "wineboot" in such cases.
