Jeroen, by the similar behaviour do you mean CreateCompatibleBitmap() function
complaining about wrong bitmap width in Wine output? Or is it some Wine crash?

I'm not sure this is a wine bug. According to this site,
http://www.ndis.com/faq/QA05040101.htm
the function is not reliable and shouldn't be used. (I've found the author to
be authoritative on anything windows networking related in the past. OTOH, much
of the information on this page is rather old.)
MSDN does seem to imply that ping is in fact used. To quote:
"If lpszUrl is non-NULL, the host value is extracted from it and used to ping
that specific host.
If lpszUrl is NULL and there is an entry in the internal server database for the
nearest server, the host value is extracted from the entry and used to ping that
server."
So I'm closing this as invalid. If you can demonstrate that windows uses
something other than ping with a sniffer trace, reopen and attach that.

To get it to work with current git:
reverted f84fa0ce6354827d6b2396ca3119c9a8bb7efcfb (to prevent regression in msi,
different problem)
made new .wine with HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer stuff according to
http://wiki.winehq.org/UsefulRegistryKeys
installed turbo lister (after it finished IDriver.exe was stuck, killed it)
changed win ver to nt4 and made msxml3 native (probably should have done that
before installing turbo lister as it registers msxml3 and ships a native version
and calls regsvr32 but it uses the builtin version; builtin seems not to
register certain classids) in winecfg
installed mdac 2.5SP3
regsvr32 /i msxml3.dll
now it starts up (but it realy takes its time)...
Is it our fault that it does not work with newer mdac? What is the problem?
We need to register those class-ids in our msxml3.

I could solve the other problems and never encountered x11 related problems, so
this works for me.

It looks that way, the computer I tested with was running 2.6.17. I tried it
on another computer running 2.6.16, (and Wine 0.9.18) and UltraISO starts up
without issues.
