I need more information. Display driver name and version. Crash dump created by game from the game directory Errors. Also update your Wine. Also get logs set with WINEDEBUG=+xrandr,+x11settings. Also send a compressed copy of your user.reg. Use the attachment method. One important thing to note. The game only supports 4:3 resolutions. Nothing wrong with xrandr or anything like that. However the ability to lock gamma might be nice in case other games want to change it within a virtual desktop and the game doesn't have a switch, if that is something that Wine should be doing. It is true that the monitor test exposes a problem with mode handling, being that xrandr is allowed to change the display before the desktop window is created. However, I looked at Diablo 2 for the same behavior and it's not there. I really believe his complaint comes from his gamma setting.
