I checked xrandr before and while running Diablo 2. No refresh change occured, and I don't think what you said is possible at all considering no mode change actually happened. What you see is the gamma levels changing, and it's fixable in-game. As for msvcp71 and msvcr71, i think they should have been provided as well by civilization, anyway, they will (in near future) not be provided by wine.
