Ok, I'll remove winetools and try again. I only wanted to use it as a comparison, since it had the proper behavior when installed through that route. I'll try specifying more dll overrides as well. However, interestingly enough this did not appear for me until I upgraded my linux kernel from 2.4.27 to 2.6.8. At least, the symptoms didn't - for all I know the error messages were there always. At this point, sound is almost completely disabled in SL. When it works, it is choppy and prone to stuttering. The documentation says it only runs on the Window NT4.0, 2000 and XP platforms so had not tried Win9x. Works fine when Wine configured as Windows 98.
