Damjan: Is there anything else you would like me to try?

So this is the reason why the installer failed - a lot of programs won't work
without the COM objects registered. Thus I'm closing the bug as invalid.
wineprefixcreate is run if there is no ~/.wine and as one of the steps registers
all the DLLs.

Mikolaj, I had started with an empty (deleted user.reg, system.reg..) registry
each time.

So, wineprefixcreate fixed it... I've never heard of wineprefixcreate!!:
I installed wine originally through Gentoo's ebuild.
Should wineprefixcreate be run by default if you start wine, and there's no
~/.wine directory?
at a guess, judging by the JVM log,
com.mathworks.installer.Win32.GetShortCutTarget didn't like the fact that it
couldn't find directories to put its shortcuts into, and threw a fatal
exception, naturally (?!?!)

The {00021401-0000-0000-c000-000000000046} is a shell link and is registered by
shell32. You registry must have become corrupted before installing MATLAB and
wineprefix recreated it.

Don't use rapidshare - attach here instead. Use bzip2 to make large files smaller.
In general, don't compile Wine with -fomit-frame-pointer.
I don't know the source of the deadlock :( There appears to be some heap
corruption too.

Despite the error messages the copying worked: system32 now contains the dlls.
Dan, I'm using all builtin wine libraries now, no overrides, why the need for
vcredist.exe?
Running the installer now does not crash. Now was it wineprefixcreate or
vcredist.exe that fixed it?!
Extra notes: in the setup I select custom install, installing only MATLAB and
Image Processing Toolbox components.
On the next screen, is deselect everything, so no desktop/start menu shortcuts
should be created, and no filetypes should be associated to MATLAB
