I found out that pressing both [ALT] keys, swaps the Keyboard layout. I use the
gnome applet to swap the keyboard laoyout. It is not active by default at a
Ubuntu desktop, but if you using it, the default swap shortcut is left [ALT] +
right [ALT].

Notepad also did not note the release of the [ALT] key. The release of the
[SHIFT] key works for me.

My bug has been marked as a duplicate of this bug, because it is caused by the
same change.
I don't have set XkbOptions to any value in xorg.conf
I am using Ubuntu too, but Edgy Eft.

I've found that setting the OffScreenRendering mode to fbo in the registry
allows me to see the battlefield & UI-related graphics, as well as gunfire
effects. The actual units are invisible though. Console output consists mostly
of this error:
fixme:d3d_draw:drawStridedInstanced Unsupported WINED3DDECLTYPE_FLOAT16_4

Thanks for the pointer. Unfortunately I'm not so sure whether the Debian HOWTO
is still up-to-date with the filenames. In any case, setting XLOCALEDIR didn't
change the behaviour: I still get "err:keyboard:X11DRV_ToUnicodeEx Please
report: no char for ...". This happens for the following env dirs:
export XLOCALEDIR=/emul/ia32-linux/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale
There exists no directory /emul/ia32-linux but the package "ia32-libs" has a
directory /usr/lib32/X11/locale as verified by "dpkg -L ia32-libs | grep X11",
hence I tried
export XLOCALEDIR=/usr/lib32/X11/locale
and
export XLOCALEDIR=/usr/lib32/X11/locale/common
but all didn't change anything. I'll try to dig more into the X11 keysym
matching, but I'd be glad for any further pointers as well.
