The attachment shows the trace of mmio and avifile, when I was trying to open an uncompressed avi file without audio stream (plays fine with mplayer). The file selection dialog tries to show a preview; I think therefore the error shows up twice in the trace. The workaround is to make wait_on() in serial.c wait for the event to occur. Note that the FTDI USB serial converter will not work directly, as it does not support TIOCGICOUNT ioctl. I have also fixed the FTDI usb driver to work with this if anyone is interested.
