And they mentioned it worked fine with gcc. The only problems where related to "extern inline" declarations that are specific to gcc. However, I changed wined3d to refuse to load if this fails. This is wrong, instead it should continue and just refuse to enable D3D features. DirectDraw (2D) should still work. Note that you will still need libGL to link against, but you do not need 3D hardware to use the 2D features.
