I had been running the installer against a fresh wine instance set up by ies4linux, which included the actual ie6 software, as per http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/page/Main_Page I just tried making a new .wine and ran winetricks fakeie6 and ran the installer, and as you say, it didn't get the error it previously got, but it also didn't launch the update process window that is part of installation as it did after installing the full ie6.
