That's interesting.
This explains why it fails considerably more often in late game when all kinds
of units are stomping through the battlefield.
I tried increasing videomem in the registry and I have a feeling that it's
running more stable now, probably because textures stay longer in memory when
more of it is available.
It's strange tho that occasionally you can play for an hour without problems,
while some other time SupCom 'stack-overflows' right away.
Also, the new Forged Alliance addon uses more detailed effects/textures/shaders
even on lowest settings. It only makes sense that FA crashes more often and
sooner than the original game does. But it doesn't matter since FA suffers from
severe graphical corruption anyway
Still, the issue remains. Thanks to your work Erich we now have ReplacefileW,
and maybe your research on the crashbug can help to fix it. Maybe. Maybe not. I
wouldn't know, I know almost nothing about C :)

the cp2101.c driver and most others do not have the TIOCGICOUNT ioctl, too, see
att.
my mobile ft app wants it, too, see att.
http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=10999
some drivers have it, now trying to copy it to cp2101.c.

>From the research I did (a long time ago now) the game appeared to be accessing
textures that had recently been deallocated by Wine. So, I think that the
reference count somewhere is not being applied correctly and some textures are
getting freed too quickly. From watching the main menu pause for a moment when
you move your mouse over the buttons I would guess that Wine is not handling
pre-loading textures and holding on to them until the game indicates they are
no-longer needed anywhere.

Some information I discovered:
-This crash has nothing to do with Supcom's version
-Definately D3D related crash
-Zooming out so only strategic symbols remain, seems to make it crash less
often
-Happens on all graphic settings. I have reports however that shadows are
dangerous in this regard.
The crash is the last hurdle to give SupCom the ability for proper basic
gameplay.
If this gets fixed. We can try ourselves at putting the 'fun' back into game by
fixing other bugs like slow videos

The patch
http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-patches/2008-February/050731.html should
fix this.
