Fixmes about depth switching can be ignored:
fixme:xrandr:X11DRV_XRandR_SetCurrentMode Cannot change screen BPP from 32 to 8
X doesn't support depth switching and will likely never support it. A while ago
I posted some more info about this on http://wiki.winehq.org/DirectDraw.
Basically the problem is that a lot of programs need e.g. 8 or 16 bit and that
all drawing operations need to be converted to 24 bit (as that's what X uses)
and most of the time we also need an inverse conversion (24 -> 8). This
combined with roundtrips to the Xserver this is slow. A DIB engine could help.
For nicely behaving games (e.g. StarCraft), playing with
DirectDrawRenderer=opengl and RenderTargetLockmode can make 8bit games very
fast (assuming the right GL extensions are around).

Hi,
I cannot confirm that the patch of Roderick fixes the problem! BUT:
It seems to be FIXED IN ANOTHER WAY:
I test it with 0.9.56 and UT99 again: I get no error screen in xfce, but I get
one in a failsafe terminal!
I get the latest git and applied the patch, installing with the script
tools/wineinstall (compiling false...)
Then I test the latest git again without the patch (no problem to install it
with the script), and it seemst to be just fixed: I get no error screen in xfce
or failsafe terminal!
I retest the latest git with the patch and ./configure, make depend, make. No
compiling error too and no error screen.
I don't know why I needn't apply the patch. Can anybody confirm this? Otherwise
I want to retry it with the next official release, maybe then happens something
different (global install vs. the local install in your home directory).
greetings
Jan

Yes, there is still no dplay in 0.9.56. One has to use the native dll in this
case.

The patch got applied to the Wine Git and should be available in Wine releases
starting from Wine 0.9.57. If you still have problems with it feel free to
reopen the bug.

Alexandre committed my patch along with the tests to return upper case
drive letter in some APIs, please test how it goes.

Summary: Many invisible strings in forwarded nx (nomachine.com)

Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.55.
Platform: PC-x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: blocker
Priority: P2
Component: fonts
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org

screenshot of nx session with unvisible strings
Setup:
- os: ubuntu 7.10 on a pentium 4 running the free edition of the nx server
3.1.0-5 from nomachine.com
- wine: 0.9.55~winehq0~ubuntu~7.10-1
- nx client 3.1.0-6 running on a g4 with macosx
- the pc running ubuntu and the are connected to the same local network
(However, the bug also occured with previous ubuntu/wine/nx versions.)
Hello,
I am running ubuntu 7.10 on a headless pentium 4 to which I connect remotely
from a ppc-mac by using nx from nomachine. The two computers are on the same
local network.
When I start a windows application under wine, most of its strings in the
application's menus, buttons,... are invisible. Most strings are even invisible
in the "wine configuration" dialog.
However, when I set ubuntu to autologin and I use a vnc client to connect to
the vnc server in the autostarted gnome session, the strings are all visible.
(In other words, the problem does not occur when using vnc.)
Regards
Francesco

Seeing the same on FIFA2008 (demo), FIFA2004 (demo) and HL2/TF2/TFC (steam)
under XFCE, IceWM and MWM. (with or w/o Compiz/xcompmgr)
