I double-checked it yestarday evening with version 1.0-rc1. Although the
graphics of steam looks better - almost equivalent to the windows version - the
freeze problem is still available.

That's too unspecific to fix. That's what IMO you should do: Test with latest
wine; open a bugzilla entry with a descriptive summary exactly stating your
problem (e.g. "Total Annihilation crashes at startup" or "Total Annihilation
doesn't show any graphics" or whatever else you mean by "doesn't work"). Fill
in all report fields you can. Play with various DirectDrawRenderer and
RenderTargetLockMode overrides (see http://wiki.winehq.org/UsefulRegistryKeys)
and if it changes anything add that info to bugreport. If possible, try to run
some other 2d game demos (8bpp and not 8bpp) on your machine, so as to know if
your problem is 8bpp only or a general directdraw problem on your setup. Attach
+ddraw,+d3d,+d3d_surface wine log. That's the way to have a helpful bug report.
As Roderick said, ignore the 'Cannot change screen BPP from 32 to 8' fixme. It
doesn't mean the game shouldn't run.

I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. When I've applied patches ( 3dmark and
yours) on wine 0.9.57 everything compile and built with no problems but mouse
is still not warped. Do I have to somehow set WINEFORCEMOUSEWARP? And if then
how. Thanks

PS if I can please put in a plug for this bug, Chinese input on Linux is in a
shockingly bad state right now, despite the numerous input methods available.
Google Pinyin is the only IME that is halfway decent on any platform. Having
Google Pinyin working on Linux would make Linux much more useful to the huge
number of Chinese speakers in the world -- particularly as many (in my circles
anyway) now exclusively use Google Pinyin, and need it to be available on
computers they use. Maybe this is just an enhancement for the wine project,
but it bears a lot of importance for the global expansion of Free software
usage in general, due to the huge number of Chinese speakers in the world and
the speed at which they are embracing technology.

Some programs require changing the screen color depth to 16bpp or 8bpp. If you
are running a 24bpp X session, like 99.9% of us are, the program in question
will probably fail. In the case of the game I've been arguing with, the static
256 color screens work fine, but the direct3d part (the actual game table)
fails and triggers the bug. The attempt causes WINE to throw an error to the
controlling terminal and the window turns all black when there should be a game
screen - this bug is 100% reproducible.
Invalid? Wontfix? Um.. no.

This now seems to install OK, with the exception of the following
errors/warnings:
fixme:shell:SHAutoComplete SHAutoComplete stub
fixme:imm:ImmInstallIMEW (L"C:\\windows\\system32\\GooglePinyin.ime",
L"\4e2d\6587 (\7b80\4f53) - \8c37\6b4c\62fc\97f3\8f93\5165\6cd5"): stub
After that, I have no idea how to start the IME... I have tried launching all
the Google Pinyin .exe files (installed in Program Files). I have only once
gotten anything to work, most times the programs exit immediately. However I
got this output once (unreproducible):
$ wine .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Google/Google\
Pinyin/GooglePinyinDaemon.exe
fixme:sync:CreateTimerQueue stub
fixme:system:SystemParametersInfoW Unimplemented action: 4132

I haven't seen this as a problem for pure cutscenes, but rather for the GDI/NOD
selection screen and the map that is displayed between each mission.
