I had to:
- upgrade Wine (you explicitely requested "1.1.32 or newer" but Debian unstable
only has 1.1.31 so I built it myself)
- find the right CD
- install the game
- run the game
You seriously claim that "takes less than a minute"?
And this is for an easy to reproduce bug.

I answered it IMHO quite clearly in comment #2.
If comment #2 was unclear to you, you failed to asked for a clarification.
Yes, the workaround works (but it's an ugly workaround, not a bug fix).
Is it now clear enough for you to start fixing this bug?
Any additional information you need for fixing it?
My offer to buy and send a copy of the game to the person working on fixing the
bug is also valid for you.

I got Vdfs32e.exe - Program error on start with Wine 1.1.20 and higher.
Gothic starts without this error with at last 1.1.19 Wine Version.
I tried vdfs Patch, but without success.

I filed a separate bug for the regression:
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20565
(Emu42: regression in StretchBlt causes black display background)
Maybe this gives a hint about the problem, the commit talks about client-side
optimizations. Maybe they optimize too much?

FWIW, the issue in http://bugs2.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=14612 looks like
depth buffer precision differences between the onscreen and offscreen depth
buffer. I think this might only be a problem for GF8 and later cards.

This issue is also fixed for me. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 with Wine 1.1.32 from
the PPA. I have no graphical issues with BF2, and am using all settings on low
at 1024x768 fullscreen with an Nvidia 6600 GT.

compiled wine 1.1.32, followed the instructions about Framework 3.5
installation :
sh wintricks dotnet20
sh wintricks dotnet30
and then trying to install 3.5 with:
wine ./dotnetfx35.exe
the installation starts, but after the heavy download it does, this error
comes:
err:msi:ACTION_InstallFiles compressed file wasn't extracted
