Whether or not memory is leaked seems to be related to some property of the articles being downloaded; I believe it's only Yenc encoded articles that are affected. I used the http://winezeug.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/install-wine-deps.sh script to install all dependencies. Then I downloaded the current EVE premium client (version=5.20 build=70124 - Quantum Rise 1.0.1) and installed it. Everything worked fine.
