I have the same problem, but it doesn't seem to be Wine related. Try to
communicate with the phone from linux native application (e.g. slink from SieFS
http://chaos.allsiemens.com/siefs/).
In my case "slink i" works only once. The second run returns error. (But if I
disconnect and connect the phone it works - once.) On computers where "slink i"
works fine also in the second run, SiMoCo works.

latest apidiff
and here is the latest apidiff, with wine 1.1.22 and Windows Vista.
i'm going to look at completing the wine spec files in the future. i don't
understand how francois got the data he has on the "spec discrepancies" wiki
page though... those are some other scripts i think.

Problem still exists with Wine 1.1.22. Upon attempting to run Freedom Force
via Steam, a popup dialog box appears saying, "Installing Microsoft DirectX for
Windows (Step 1 of 1), next another popup titled "Alert", saying "alert: init
renderer," appears.
Upon clicking Ok, Freedom Force closes, and Winedbg does not start.

* With regards to comment #25 From Ken Sharp:
|
| and I think the problem is in dsound, not dmusic, or perhaps both!
That's possible -- today I found that after "sh winetricks directx9 mfc42" I am
able to hear sounds in the demo ONLY if I set "dsound" override to "n".
This last thing wasn't mentioned in the HowTo of Damon Kohler (and even maybe
doesn't even apply to a full version of RoN).
dsound, dmusic, dmsynth, dmime, dswave -- all should be set to "native", except
"dmloader". Setting any of them to "builtin" breaks the sound here. Version I
use for testing is wine-1.1.22-51-g85b6189 .
Now that we know the workaround, it could be easier to debug out faulty code in
Wine :)
