Debugger output with multiple threads stuck in spinlocks.
SUMMARY
Under the wrong circumstances, a program doing many memory allocations from
multiple threads can
experience more than 100x performance degradation.
I'm seeing this in my own Rust program, which has 16 sometimes-compute-bound
threads on a 12 CPU machine. This works fine on Microsoft Windows and when
compiled for Linux. Under Wine, it can be over 100x slower.
Multiple threads are banging on a spinlock at
_InterlockedCompareExchange
[Z:\usr\src\packages\BUILD\include\winnt.h:6630] in ntdll
spin_lock
[Z:\usr\src\packages\BUILD\dlls\ntdll\sync.c:937] in ntdll
This is the spin lock around the queue for pausing threads.
DISCUSSION
This looks like futex congestion. That's a known kind of problem, but doesn't
seem to have
been seen in Wine before. It may be that some programs just run really slow
under Wine,
and nobody knows why.
The code in NTDLL is clearly intended to handle the fast case without doing an
OS-level lock. Under light load, that's O(1). But under heavy load, with
multiple threads pounding on spinlocks, each spinlock waits longer, and there
are multiple threads, so it becomes O(N^2). Which means huge slowdowns.
See discussion at https://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t=37688 which has
snippets of the code that's causing the problem. I can copy all that info over
here if necessary. Let me know.

Summary: CodeMeterRuntime: Install fails with

Terminal output of the installer.
Steps to reproduce:
* Install dotnet48 into the prefix with winetricks.
* Download CodeMeterRuntime 64bit 7.60 (but earlier versions had the same
error) for Windows from:
https://www.wibu.com/us/support/user/downloads-user-software.html
* Execute the installer.
* To reduce complexity in the installer on the Custom Setup step select "don't
install" for all components except "CodeMeter Runtime Kit". I.e. "don't
install" for Network Server, WibuShellExtension, User Help, Automatic server
search, Remote access to WebAdmin.
* Finish the installation. The installer will state that it ended prematurely.
The relevant errors are probably:
00c4:err:service:process_send_command service protocol error - failed to write
pipe!
016c:err:msi:ITERATE_StartService failed to start service L"CmWebAdmin.exe"
(1053)
016c:err:msi:execute_script Execution of script 0 halted; action
L"StartServices" returned 1627
016c:err:msi:ITERATE_Actions Execution halted, action L"InstallExecute"
returned 1627
In Wine 7 I ignored the installer error with the following arguments to the
installer:
/ComponentArgs "*":"/qn ADDLOCAL=Complete,DotNET_Modules,AutomaticServerSearch
REMOVE=WibuShellExtension,EnableNetworkServer,AccessToWebAdmin /l*v
C:\users\z0rb\Temp\keyinst.log /norestart DISABLEROLLBACK=1 PROP_CMCC=\"none\""
The important argument was DISABLEROLLBACK=1. This meant that I can keep the
install even with the failure. Then run CodeMeterCC.exe which started the
CodeMeter windows service. With that service I could use further software that
uses CodeMeter as their licensing service. In wine 8 even that service
(together with CmWebAdmin.exe) started having the "failed to write pipe
error!". I am out of workarounds at the moment and asking here for help. If you
can instruct me with further debug flags and similar to narrow down the error I
am ready to put in the work.

Bug ID: 44827
Summary: FL Studio: 32-bit/64-bit VST plugin bit bridging soft
locks the host
Product: Wine
Version: 3.4
Hardware: x86-64
OS: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
Assignee: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
Reporter: ajduck(a)outlook.com

Trying to bridge a 32-bit VST plugin in FL Studio 64-bit, or bridge a 64-bit
VST plugin in FL Studio 32-bit, leads to this being outputted:
003c:err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x1ac6028 "?" wait timed out
in thread 003c, blocked by 002a, retrying (60 sec)
And the DAW soft locks with a loading cursor as it blocks the UI until the
plugin's loaded, forever trying to bridge the plugin.
(By "soft lock", I mean that FL Studio itself is still responsive, but you're
completely blocked from doing anything and the only way to get out of it is to
kill the process.)
======
Steps to reproduce:
1. Download and install FL Studio 12 Demo:
https://support.image-line.com/redirect/FLStudio_Installer_Google
The demo and the full version are the same executable.
You will need the Arial font or any ttf named as arial.ttf in
"C:/Windows/fonts/". If you have Winetricks just run "winetricks corefonts"
(you will need the cabextract package).
2. Download any 32-bit or 64-bit VST to test.
This is the one I tried, a 32-bit plugin (http://veg.by/en/projects/syxg50/).
The plugin itself is working perfectly. You can use any VST you want, as long
as you know whether it's 32-bit or 64-bit.
Put the dll file in "~/.wineprefix/drive_c/Program Files
(x86)/Steinberg/VstPlugins/".
3. Open the FL Studio version which DOESN'T match the instruction set of the
VST you're using. If you're using a 32-bit VST plugin, open FL Studio 12
(64-bit). If you're using a 64-bit VST plugin, open FL Studio 12 (32-bit). (If
you're using the VST I linked to, open FL Studio 12 (64-bit))
4. When FL Studio is launched for the first time, a featured project file is
automatically loaded. Click "File" in the top left corner and then "New" to
create an empty project.
5. Click "Options" > "Manage Plugins"
6. Click the "Start scan" button with "Verify plugins" enabled (make sure the
light is red). Let it scan for plugins.
7. Close the window, click "Add", and then "More plugins..." (under System)
8. Find and select "S-YXG50" (or if you used another VST, pick that).
9. Because the instruction set of the VST plugin doesn't match the host
program's (FL Studio), FL Studio will try to run the VST plugin under a
"bridge" (which uses ilbridge.exe, the bridging program installed as part of FL
Studio). However, the plugin never loads. The UI blocks any interaction while
plugins are being loaded so FL Studio is effectively soft locked.

Was able to install and use last year using Mint 19.1 and Wine 4.0.1 using the
following fix, that I had posted in the AppDB for DelftShip. I have since moved
over to Manjaro 18.1.5 and using Staging 5.0-rc2. I followed the procedure
below and it installed acouple of extra files and I didnt see any errors on the
installation, but when I run the program I get "Runtime Error 217 at
00000000004140EC"
Last working fix
"Possible problem with some distro/wine combination - found was that the
downloaded "exe" installer would hang up at "moving files"; see below for
workaround.
Set Winecfg default to Windows 7 The exe installer is affected by bug 34989 /
33345, and the workaround mentioned in that bug report works for DELFTship. Run
the downloaded exe with the following command to extract the files within it:
wine /path/to/version_of_delftship.exe /extract Example: dave@dave-GB-BXBT-1900
~ $ wine /home/dave/Downloads/DELFTship_90_300_mc0_sa.exe /extract This will
create a subdirectory with the extracted files in the directory where the exe
is located. The name of the subdirectory will be some combination of letters
and numbers. Example: /home/dave/Downloads/323610A Within the directory are two
files, Delftship.msi and DelftShip.x64.msi one is 32 bit and one 64 bit. take
your pick, both worked fine on my version of wine 2.0. Once you click on the
version you want it will install DelftShip and ask you if you want to run the
program. That's all folks ;-0"
I hope this can work again thanks for your hard work

Applications created with Delphi create secondary top level windows without

completely disappearing without any ability to restore it.
This is a regression caused by
commit 61e50e15ba45ad54655f98619f5ef33917033165

winex11: Map zero-size windows and set an empty window region for them.
Admittedly Windows behaviour is weird: it minimizes such windows in an MDI
style with desktop as an MDI client and Delphi window as an MDI child.
https://source.winehq.org/patches/data/196455 is an attempt to fix this
regression.
Before this patch: no taskbar window for a normal or minimized owned window.
After this patch: no taskbar window for normal owned window, after a window
being minimized a taskbar button appears, after a window being restored a
taskbar button gets removed.
Attachment contains a simple test app (source + binary) that reproduces this
problem.

What it looked like the last time it worked
When you click on an attraction or person in RollerCoaster Tycoon 1 & 2 you can
rename the object. A standard windows text-box should open in the upper-left
corner of the screen letting you input a new name for that object.
This text window is hidden behind the game screen when it is opened thus it is
inaccessible/not usable.
Tried with virtual desktop mode and fullscreen: both have the same issue.
Nothing obvious appears in the terminal.
Last version when it worked: Wine-6.0.
Bisecting revealed commit 4ce1d7f93a35322d149cbde29d619e2580159a80
was the culprit. Can't revert it on current Wine but the rename window appears
properly with the previous commit.
Steps to reproduce in RCT 2 demo:
Start a new game with the left-most icon at the bottom, select either "Crazy
Castle" or "Six Flags Belgium" scenario.
Left-click on an object to open an information window, select the rename icon
(looks like a brownish name-tag). A text-box is opened but it is placed behind
the game screen.

Hello,
some of Microsoft's tools from .NET Framework SDKs - namely managed debuggers
(CLR) - stopped working after 1.1.33+ release. They seem to be very picky about
object security.
I bisected this one but technically this isn't a regression because Rob's token
patches made Wine more correct - exposing another object security problem.

Using the "admins" sid (alias) as token user in
server/token.c:token_create_admin() instead of current "interactive" sid fixes
the problem. Though I don't know if this is the right thing to do.
I hope I provided enough infos and let Alexandre handle it ;-)
To get detailed token infos/dumps you might be interested in this little
console app, from cygwin's Corinna Vinschen ;-)

It might provide useful information when run under different security

The plugin UI never updates, it's window is cleared with black on startup and
then it just shows the remains of anything that was ever drawn over it, like
unrelated windows. With the commit is reverted everything redraws normally.
Softube provides a free plugin that reproduces the issue ("Saturation Knob"),
but sadly it's not very straightforward to set it up. First you need some DAW
software what can run windows VST plugins through wine, like lmms. Then Softube
doesn't provide it's plugins directly but insists on installing them through
their bloated downloader, which then insists to install several licensing
services. I could not get it to work through wine and used a windows vm for
that part. Once you get the plugin dll however everything works through wine,
including "activation" (even for a free plugin) except that the UI is not
updating.

Hi,
With wine-7.0-rc5, my gamepad (XBox Series) is not recognized in-game - I tried
with wireless or wired mode and in both cases, the pad does not work.
On Win11, the gamepad is automatically recognized, no need to modify controller
in settings.
Tried with Proton-6.3 outside Steam and same issue.

Hello, how are you?
I am testing the three affinity brand programs (the photo, the publisher and
the designer) installing them in test mode (there is a report of an affinity
program that claims to access the "extract" box but it is for licensed users,
not in shareware mode) and the debugger jumps giving me an error.
The libraries that have been installed are dotnet48 and dotnet35, the wine is
9.12 without patches, Windows 10 mode and I have not installed directx yet.
Below I send the 3 debugging errors that I received and the terminal output of
the affinity photo.
the download link is: https://affinity.serif.com/

This is one of the few games that I know of which makes some use of OpenGl in
bitmaps. When Wine was compiled with OSMesa support, tiles containing terrain
turn black as soon as I launch a game.
Reproduced with Nvidia binary drivers 375.20 and nouveau/mesa.
I tried Civilization III Complete (both the Steam and the GOG.com versions have
this bug).
Terminal output:

Here follows a new bug report regarding the problem observed in old bug report
15480.
It was told me that I should open a new bug report. ;-)
Okay, the issue regarding the creation of useless shortcut files is back in
Wine 8.0 (stable).
When I open a *.xlsx file at the desktop and save it (with the same name) to an
*.ods file then Excel 2010 will create two files. One is a *.lnk (which points
to the original xlsx) and the other is a shortcut regarding the ods file but
also with *.ods ending.
As mentioned, both of them are non-functional.

SafeDisc 2.05.030 does not work out of the box. The user-visible symptom is
that the application exits with exit code 0 without any output. This affects
for example the Command and Conquer Red Alert 2 installer, which is safedisc
protected for some reason.
The problem seems to be related to the specific secdrv.sys version. If I take a
secdrv.sys from a newer safedisc version(e.g. 2.40.010 from the RA2 Yuri's
revenge expansion) and put it in C:\windows\system32\drivers, the installer
works.

[This was discovered using CrossOver by CodeWeavers, going from version 20.0.4

Output from the command line tool "ISCC.exe" (part of the InnoSetup tools) now
has extra newlines that are doing line wrapping. Unfortunately this breaks up
words in the output which impedes our parsing of the output.
Example output when running under wine from CrossOver 21.1.0:
\r\r\n\u001b[?25h\u001b[?25lCopyright (C) 2001-2004 Alex Yackimoff. All rights

I believe the "[?25h" and "[?25l" are escape sequences that were not present
when running under CrossOver 20.0.4.
The '\r' and '\n' characters are showing up in what used to be single-line
text, like:

The first Army Men game has incorrect colors. This causes the cinematics to be
black, the in game colors to be crushed, for instance blue rivers become black
rivers, and the greens of the forest all become one color of green. It makes
things somewhat difficult to see. I have tested this on different computers
with different hardware to make sure. Someone mentioned it has something to do
with the bitmaps for the game not being converted properly.
