Drive mapping of Z:

Dear friends and developers of WINE, I've been using your application now for some time, and it works quite well yet. However, I found the mapping of Drive Z: to root, which seems a bit strange to me. I've also read some of your discussion on this topic, too. Personally, I'd consider this a maybe issue of security. Nowadays Linux users don't care as much about security as server admins would do. Alas, Linux being a multi-user system by tradition should take care of "normal" home desktop users trying to migrate from proprietary realms. It would help a lot if WINE would do a more secure installation by default, but this is only my 2p. (Maybe it's possible just to leave out the Z: mapping?) Kind regards, schollsky

msvcrt: _getmaxstdio and _setmaxstdio

Greetings, I have an application that requires these functions which are currently stubs in wine. These functions set/retrieve the number of files that can be simultaneously open at the stdio level. As of now the Win32 platform has a default of 512 and can be set as high as 2048. There is probably quite a bit of work required to be truly compatible. For example, fail when you try to fopen() more than the maximum number of files. My simple fix for my app is to set an initial static variable to 512 and allow this variable to be set via _setmaxstdio as long as it is less <= 2048 and return this variable when _setmaxstdio is called. Is such a patch a positive thing because it allows more apps to run, or is it a negative thing because it might mask the fact that more work needs to be done? Perhaps add a WARN that these values are for informational purposes only and may not be enforced? Lotus Notes 7 success!

Thanks to a few targeted patches written by Stefan Siebert and James Hawkins, and of course decades of effort by the whole Wine team, Lotus Notes 7 trial version now installs and runs! See http://wiki.winehq.org/LotusNotes for details. I just spent an hour or so playing with Notes as a plain old email client. It had a few mysterious crashes, but in general seemed usable. (Not that I'd ever use it after getting used to gmail, but that's another story.) I filed bug http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5752 about a strangeness in the email client. - Dan

Freetype configure checks are backward

I believe the Freetype configure checks are backward. First we check for the library being present, and only then do we check for the freetype-config problem: AC_SUBST(FREETYPELIBS,"") AC_SUBST(FREETYPEINCL,"") AC_CHECK_LIB(freetype,FT_Init_FreeType,ft_lib=yes,ft_lib=no,$X_LIBS) if test "$ft_lib" = "no" then wine_cv_msg_freetype=no else AC_CHECK_PROG(ft_devel,freetype-config,freetype-config,no) This fails to work when Freetype is installed somewhere outside of /usr/ such as /usr/local/ with /usr/local/bin in the path. freetype-config would of course know where to look for the library, but we perform the check for the library first, without taking the output of freetype-config into concern. Wouldn't it make sense to revert these two changes? Gerald
