It's already gone. The reason old stuff still works on RH 7.1 is that we're actually shipping both 1.4.2 and 2.0.1 in the same package. 1.4.2 and 2.0.1 have very little in common except for providing the same functionality.
A decision on which version of the FreeType API would be required.
2.x definitely. They didn't redesign the API for no reason.
