Hi guys,
As you all know WineConf 2009 will take place at the campus of the University of Twente in the Netherlands. This is the university at which I have studied and still live. Julius Schwartzenberg (a computer science student) and I have talked to various students and employees whether they would be interested in WineConf. We have the impression that there is quite some interest from them in WineConf (it is hard to say how much people are interested but I would guess a few dozen).
WineConf itself is open to anyone but except for AJ his keynote, I don't think it is that interesting for outsiders. What I'm suggesting is that we hold a 'WinePreConf' on the Friday before WineConf at lets say 4pm or so at which we will give one or two presentations (lets say half an hour each) about Wine. It would be meant for students and others with a technical background and it would explain things like how Wine works, how it is developed, what it is used for ..... and other interesting you could think about. After the presentations there would be time for some beer. Attendees can ask questions and perhaps can be lured to hack on Wine as well ;)
Personally I think such an event would be good to give others an overview of Wine and to attract more developers. I don't expect all Wine developers to be there but I expect that a big part of us is already available by then (at least the US guys, since US planes arrive in the morning). I think it would even be possible to hold such an event in a lecture room which has video equipment and even streaming support, so we could have some Youtube movies in good quality ;)
What do you guys think about it? I really think there is an interest in this and I think the university might be willing to help as well.
Regards, Roderick Colenbrander

I think it's a nifty idea. The key catch would be getting a space for the meeting; if the University can help with that, I think it would work great.
Of course, you locals would need to drive the effort, as many of us will be inbound during that time. I'd be cheerful to sit in the back and heckle, presuming my flight isn't delayed and I make it in time.
Also, we should note that anyone wishing to attend Wineconf but not stay at the hotel should still let us know so we can plan to have food for you.
Cheers,
Jeremy

Space is not really an issue.

I would organize it together with Julius and perhaps some others. The main thing we need from 'Wine' are 2 people who can give a presentation and what it should be about. I'll try to ask some people around here for input.

At least I will be there (and can't say for others). I also talked a bit with Julius and Hans and likely we will eat somewhere in the center of Enschede at least on Saturday. The restaurants on the campus (or close to here) can be good as well but in the center you also have some pubs and it has a nicer atmosphere.
Finally if we would need some funds for this (I don't think it is needed but in the worst case we might need at max 200 euro or so perhaps for drinks or other things), would the Wine Fund be able to assist?

Certainly seems reasonable to me.
Anyone object?

Hi Roderick,
Is this still going to happen? If so, I'd probably head over to Enschede a bit earlier than planned.
Hi Paul,
It took some time to put things into motion. Over the past couple of days Julius and I spoke to a lot of people from the university and most were quite interested. Early next week we hope to have a meeting with the study association from computer science, to discuss our plans (we have made some). Depending on the results of that meeting we will decide whether WinePreConf takes place or not. I hope to bring some good news soon :)

Hi all,
A couple of weeks ago Julius and I picked up the idea to host a WinePreConf session for students and other people from the university, to tell them about Wine. Before we submitted our proposal we talked to a lot of students and other employees. We got some a lot of positive responses and for that reason wanted to organize it. Since we wanted WinePreConf to succeed and not only get 10 visitors, we wanted support from within the university / student association to provide us with facilities and most of all assistance with promoting the activity (e.g. spamming students).
Thanks to bureaucracy it took a while to get in touch with the right people. People with high positions within computer science weren't interested. The student association from computer science, Inter-Actief, was quite interested. Unfortunately they have an activity weekend which starts at Friday and for that reason they weren't interested in helping us out and a big part of the potential visitors would be away. Next to this we have contacted others without much luck.
While we should be able to get a lecture room without cooperation, we fear that without assistance from e.g. students we don't get enough attendees from outside Wine and for that reason it isn't worthwhile to organize.
We regret that we have to announce that WinePreConf won't take place :(

Perhaps I'm missing something, but what's wrong with just presenting in front of a camera? The vast majority of the audience was always going to be online anyway.
Thanks, Scott Ritchie
So you would propose video recordings of one or two presentations? People want to join can come then. Well, that in combination with a room should be fixable. What do others think about that?
The problem for me is that I don't have much time left (will be in the US from 20-27). Can't speak for Julius though.
What do others think?

That sounds like a good plan to me. It'd be good to get the wider word out by having the presentations online, too.

Yes, I indeed think that could work. We do have quite a lot of activity on Usenet here (local utwente hierarchy), so an announcement there would probably reach quite a few interested people here too.

Time probably won't be an issue for me. We can probably arrange a room and camera/streaming. I think it is important to have a clear list of who is going to speak there. I understand from at least Scott Ritchie he wants to give a presentation. Who else is interested?

If it's just me then maybe we could compress it into regular wineconf.
Thanks, Scott Ritchie

I was planning on showing up, but didn't have a presentation planned. I don't think most people new to wine would be interested in topics I'm more familiar with (appinstall, porting wine, winetricks).

Probably the best option is to skip Friday and to arrange good camera's for Saturday and film all the interesting talks. Then we can record AJ his keynote and talks given by others e.g. one by you and perhaps one about 3D or so. Just some small movies which we can put on Youtube.

Most talks are going to be technical (*) and will not target a non-developer audience. Conversely a talk targeted at users, that is one that describes what Wine is, what can it do, gives examples of applications that can be run, that won't interest the WineConf audience much... except maybe as an example of a talk that they could then give at Universities and LUGs back home.
So if we are to post something on YouTube that's targeted at people discovering Wine, then it has to be a talk specific for that audience.
(*) The only talk that's maybe not too technical would be Alexandre's keynote, mostly because it usually deals more with the life and progression of the project so anyone familiar with open-source projects can understand it.

I can not attend, but would love to see or preferrably hear anything developer related.

I'm down for this. I want to give a talk about the future of Wine usability and what it can look like as Wine 1.2 rolls around.
