i set commctl32 to native and copied the dll from a clean win98 install.
Now it complains about missing comctrl.dll, but copying it the same way as
commctl32 (from windows install to wine c:/windows/system directory) doesn't
help. I get the following error:
err:thunk:_loadthunk (commctrl.dll, Cctl1632_ThunkData16, comctl32.dll):
Unable to load 'commctrl.dll', error 2
err:module:LdrInitializeThunk "comctl32.dll" failed to initialize, aborting
err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"c:
\\windows\\system32\\winecfg.exe" failed, status c0000142
now i can't even run winecfg (getting error as above)

It looks like the game is failing because a required texture format isn't
available.
Almost everything has been merged into wined3d now, including a some updates
that fix problems with wined3d reporting texture formants, can you please
retest either with wine-cvs or wine 0.9 when it's released.
If your still experiancing problems can you run Dow with the command line
WINEDEBUG=trace+d3d9,d3d_caps,warn_d3d,d3d_caps wine dowexename.exe 2>
dowbugreport.log
replacing dowexename.exe with the name of the executable you are trying to run
and attache the log file to this bug report.
Thanks,
Oliver.

It may be a Regression with patch id=19048
See
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3239
The output is not exactly the same but patch id=19048 seems to have triggered
some new code paths.
If you can do a regression test using 6:33:00 then 6:34:00 to confirm if that
patch is causing the problem.
cvs update -PAd -D "20050721 6:34:00"
The CVS and regression testing methods are not that hard to get working and you
can use a script in the wine tree to test without installing.

That's a seriously old version of Wine.
Please try downloading the latest weekly snapshot
of Wine from http://winehq.org, build it from
source (it's easy!), and see if you still have the
problem.

Seems to be a bug in riched20.dll. Please change component to wine-richedit
When i run with native riched20 (WINEDLLOVERRIDES="riched20=n" wine Pajek.exe) the
aforementioned error is gone.

Didn't try cvs. After the duplicate bug identifier showed up, I
grabbed the patch from the other bug report and applied it. It
compiled. (I didn't use ./tools/wineinstall because I had to compile
in /usr/src as root to avoid running out of disk space).

Yes - that does indeed fix the problem. Notes starts up without problems and
seems to run well enough.
Thanks for the tip.
